The film, ‘Little Obama’ is based on the novel ‘Obama the Menteng Kid’ which author Damien Dematra claims to be a true account of Barry’s childhood in the Jakarta suburb. He said he had proof that Obama prayed in the manner of a Muslim and recited the Qur’an.
(Apparently, Obama ordered them to remove the ‘proof’)
A film about US President Barack Obama’s childhood days in Indonesia debuts in Jakarta on Wednesday, promising a very different perspective on the man in the White House. “Obama the Menteng Kid”, is set in the upscale Jakarta neighbourhood of Menteng where Obama lived from 1967 to 1971 with his mother and Indonesian stepfather.
Co-director Damien Dematra said it would show the US president in a light that Americans might find strange. “Viewers, especially Westerners, will see a different world. They’ll see Obama eating chicken satay, not hamburgers. They’ll see his neighbours and friends wearing chequered sarongs and Muslim caps,” he told AFP.
Even so, producers skirted controversy surrounding the extent that Islam influenced Obama’s early years in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country. A scene showing Obama, who is Christian, praying like a Muslim was dropped as it was deemed “too political”, Mr Dematra said.
About 60 percent of the film is factual, including controversial scenes of Obama riding a bike with a male transgender nanny. But those are facts, Demantra says.
The film has already stirred discussion here over how US politicians will react to it. Demantra says Democrats are likely to see it as inspiring, while Republicans may try to use it for political ends. CS Monitor
Gee, I wonder if the Indonesians are going to flock to see this film, considering how they reacted to his planned trip there in May which was postponed. There were threats of assassination as well as thousands of protesters in the streets against Obama as seen below:
