A shocked Iranian Muslim student was stopped and searched by armed cops while out jogging in a weight vest. “I’m 100 per cent sure that if I was blond with Caucasian skin type nobody would have noticed, but I am of dark skin complexion and from Iran and I’m sure that is related to it.” (Damn right!)
UK SUN Stunned Goudarz Karimi, 25, was simply on a mission to get fit when he was forced to remove the 30kg personal training vest so it could be checked for explosives.
Officers were called by a concerned member of the public who reported seeing a man wearing what he thought was a bomb suit. The shocked Iranian was then advised by police to wear his coat over the outfit when using it in the future.
Oxford University student Goudarz, who was training in the city at the time, added: “I felt a bit like my rights were violated. The police told me to take my vest off and to go home and I don’t see why I should.” But the force denied the decision to stop him at 3.20pm on Monday would have been “made on ethnicity alone”. (It’s because of what people who look just like you do, that makes everyone else suspect you)
Superintendent Amanda Pearson, of Thames Valley Police, said: “While I appreciate that in this case being stopped and checked by the officers may have been unsettling to the gentlemen concerned, the officers were responding to a call from a member of the public who had a genuine concern and police are duty-bound to investigate any calls of this nature to ensure public safety.”
