Calling for a ban on Westerners drinking, wearing of bikinis, and mixed male and female swimming on Egypt’s most popular tourist beaches, Barack Obama’s Islamist pals, who won success in the first round of parliamentary elections last month, are set on turning Egypt into a ‘sin-free’ holiday resort.
UK DAILY MAIL Bargain holidays for Westerners looking to get a bit of sunshine and a drink by the pool in the winter could be a thing of the past on Egypt’s Red Sea coast.
But the end of sun worshippers flying to resorts like Sharm el-Sheikh could spell disaster for an economy that has already been battered by this year’s political unrest.
Azza al-Jarf, a candidate for the Muslim Brotherhood, told supporters: ‘Tourists don’t need to drink alcohol when they come to Egypt; they have plenty at home. ’They came to see the ancient civilisation, not to drink alcohol.’ (Ah yes, the Arab Spring in full bloom)
Since its success in the first round of elections on November 28 and 29, the Brotherhood and the even more fundamentalist party of Salafi Muslims called Al-Nour have been under pressure to define their stance on a wide range of issues – including Islamic law, personal freedom and tourism.
Al-Nour has said it seeks to impose strict Islamic law in Egypt. The Muslim Brotherhood says publicly it does not want to force its views on an appropriate Islamic lifestyle on Egyptians. (But they always lie)
The unrest that saw former president Hosni Mubarak ousted has hit the economy hard and shaken investor confidence.
On Sunday, interim prime minister Kamal el-Ganzouri broke down in tears as he said the state of the economy was ‘worse than anyone imagines’.
Turning around the decline in tourism is key to breathing life back into the economy. The industry was also hit by two fatal shark attacks in Sharm el-Sheikh last year.
The Muslim Brotherhood came in first and Al-Nour second in the first round of voting. The Salafis, who follow the Wahhabi school of thought that predominates in Saudi Arabia, are clear in their opposition to alcohol and skimpy beachwear.
They are also undecided on whether unmarried couples should be allowed to share hotel rooms, or the display of ancient Egyptian statues like fertility gods.
Influential cleric Yasser Bourhami has called for ‘halal tourism’ – which includes restrictions on Westerners.
Speaking to private television network Dream TV, he said: ‘A five-star hotel with no alcohol, a beach for women – sisters – separated from men in a bay where the two sides can enjoy a vacation for a week without sins. (Your dream vacation)
‘The tourist doesn’t have to swim with a bikini and harm our youth.’
Tourism accounts for roughly 10 per cent of Egypt’s GDP, employs an estimated 3million people and is one of the pillars of its economy.
Huge swathes of the country, including the Red Sea coast with its stunning coral reefs and Nile Valley cities like Luxor, with its ancient temples and tombs, are solely dependent on tourism.
There are around 15million visitors to Egypt every year and analysts say bookings for its beach resorts – mostly far from the unrest – have recovered faster than areas in the centre of the country where most pharaonic ruins are found.
A total of 1.4million Brits visited the country last year – with 70 per cent (around one million) heading to the beach resorts.
This year, tourist arrivals fell more than 35 per cent in the second quarter because of the unrest, and Egypt expects to earn around $9billion from tourism in 2011 – down by a third.
Well. now more tourists will come to Spain. Since the “Arab Spring”, more and more tourists are coming to Spain. The American tourists and ALL Western tourists are very welcome in Spain.

sharm al sheik used to be a very popular place for israeli’s to go to, at least until before all this happened, but now i doubt any are going there now!! oh well, they still have the cotton trade to fall back on, that is , untill they screw that up for themselves also… it is going fro bad to worst there day by day it seems, most of the people there 30% can not read or write, 30% live on less that 500 bucks a year. so that doesnt leave too many people to do much for the country

all i know is this. it gets very hot there most of the time during the year, i can not imagine wearing those black cloaks at the beach in that heat, it must be awful the people must die form heat exhaution under those things. i know they can be made of some lightweight material but still you can not get any airflow in these. i can not imgaine the practical approach as to how women can wear those at all especially on the beach. and walking in the sand but this si what they want -glad it is not me, but this could be our fashion statement for the future to come for america, and not that far off if you think about how different things were in this country only 4 yrs ago, and with this retard of ours in office for another 4 yrs, would be like putting the nail on the coffin here. and that really scares me alot.

THIS BEING SAID, we need to look at the BIG picture.
What does the Free Market say? Are the tourism groups on board? Will this hurt their profits badly?
If so, I suggest that Egypt enact certain official “Shariah Free Zones” where the tourists go to. These are areas where Islamists will stay away from and the tourists me go in debauchery as they wish. Outside of this, the Egyptian Muslims may make fiat as they so desire.
That way, Muslims don’t have to look at sluttly swimwear and tourists can still get drunk. Everyone wins!

Will no booze HONESTLY hurt ratings? Who goes to the beach to get plastered? I go to the beach for the gluttony of buffets and restaurants, and also for the ocean. Not alcohol! I mean, I like hot women in swimwear, yes, but I enjoy leaving SOME of their bodies to the imagination. -and preventing fatties from donning butt floss is a true service to tourists.

Is cannibalism allowed in Islam? Keeping tourism money out of the Egyptian economy and having lots of babies for Allah will put a significant strain on the situation, and they weren’t doing that well to begin with. The Yik-wan looks like it will be doing Egyptians no favors and worse.
I suspect that all nations with a rising Muslim population will have diminishing tourism traffic. England, France, Italy, Greece can all expect the tourist to go elsewhere whether for safety or just because they are not willing to spend their money where they feel unsure and unwelcome.
I say “Come to America.” There is so much to see and do here that no one vacation can be enough to experience it all. From the casinos of Las Vegas to the paradise of Hawaii to the incredible sights of the Great Northwest to the Vast spendor of Alaska. One nation has enough that I am amazed Americans travel abroad at all. So much to see and do right here at home.
What is so utterly baffling is that the Egyptians are complaining about sagging tourism when they themselves voted into power the forces that will eliminate their tourism entirely.
Nobody wants to go to the beach to wear a burqa, or to go on sex segregated beaches, and as a healthy red blooded unmarried male, part of the reason I like to go to the beach is to admire the natural “scenery” i.e. all the hills, peaks, and valleys, of God’s handiwork, and I don’t necessarily mean the mountains, beach, and the ocean — all those hectares of gorgeous flesh in one place soaking in the rays.
Sure, some people might like the idea of a “family” vacation with a minimum of the vices such as alcohol, nudity, and the like, and they can certainly and should have that as their option.
But there are some of us that want to go to the beach, see all the beautiful women (and handsome men), play in the water, soak in the sun, and have maybe a few brewskis and a Mai Tai while on the beach and they should be free to do so.

Tourism IS an industry, after all, and industry means that some work is involved. If muslims wanted to work for a living (with almost a third of the world’s population) the islamic world would be the industrial and economic powerhouse of the globe.

It’s really, really sad for me. Egypt used to be a great and powerful nation with Pharoahs, pyramids, scribes, the Library of Alexandra, and many many other incredible things. Did you know that the Egyptians finished the great pyramid of Cheops in 2560BC after 20 years of work, and it was the tallest man-made structure in the world for more than 3,800 years? The base area of the great Cheops pyramid is 571,197 ft2, and was prepared without modern laser technolgy and surveying instruments so that the base surface never strays more than a 1/4 inch from flat? I mention all these amazing things because once Islam invaded Egypt all these things fell into disregard and shame. The proud and wise Egyptiam people saw their amazing science and history reduced to “wandering desert tribes” after the arrival of islam.
The horrible elections in Egypt will reduce Egypt to another backwards muslim country in less than two years…. the museums in Cairo will be wrecked and ransacked by the illiterate muslims… the tourist trade will die completely… and that will be that. Another country dragged back into the 7th century.

The problem with the western point of view is that they expect an extremely different country and far different culture to cater to Western demands – even in tourism. The fact is, you simply don’t understand the culture and what right do you have to determine what it should be. Stop interfering and let the natural course of the majority of Egyptian society emerge.
And this advice goes to the Egyptian government, too. What right do they have to legalize one religion over all others? This is the mistake Iran made and it has been fighting against the people on this issue for 30 years.
Religion and government mixed never does well – just ask the people of Turkey and Iran about the inconsistencies and sub cultures that develop. The power of the religious clerics in some mainly Muslim countries is too great and it causes problems, just as the power of any Christian church has caused problems in Western and European countries when it permeates government policy.
Malaysia is a Muslim country that seems to have found the right path where people on a beach whether in hijab or bikini completely accept each others right to be there. Wearing the hejab is choice and yes or no is completely accepted. France could learn a lot from them, too.
