The Thai government extended emergency rule in the country’s three southernmost provinces, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Yala for three months in an effort to quell a long-running Muslim separatist insurgency.
M & C (H/T Koleng) The current emergency decree, which permits authorities to arrest and detain suspects without court approval and grants security forces some immunity from prosecution for actions carried out in the line of duty, was due to expire on December 19.
A man riding a motorcycle was shot dead Tuesday morning in Pattani’s Nong Chik district in an attack blamed by police on southern Islamic separatists.
Local news reports quoted district police as saying the victim was on a road heading to Pattani when a gunman riding pillion on another motorcycle fired at him with a pistol. Police quoted witnesses as saying the gunman returned and shot the fallen victim twice more in the head before fleeing.
Such attacks, including beheadings and shootings of monks and school teachers, have become almost daily occurrences in the three southern provinces.
According to government figures, more than 4,800 people have been killed since the insurgency heated up in January 2004. The three Muslim-majority provinces have been under emergency rule most of the time since 2004.

But short of genocide, what could they actually do? It may seem like a concession, but would it be better to allow these provinces to cecede from Thailand to form their own Islamic state? At least it would separate most of the Muslims from the rest of Thailand.

I try to tell my friends, it’s coming here too when the Muslims reach critical mass, and that doesn’t have to amount to even 10%. I traveled these parts extensively in the early seventies. That time the people in the south were all Thai and nothing but Thai.
The jihad started when young Muslim Thai’s went to Arabia as workers, where they were indoctrinated with Islam. They were promised money and weapons if they returned home and started a mosque, (which they did) in order to conduct the jihad.
The dragon seed of Islam has turned into a tsunami. The Thai government tried everything from origami to handing the counter jihad to a Muslim general, with predictable results…..

Thailand should just get out of the former Malay/Muslim sultanate of Pattani whose territory comprises present day Thai provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala, and end its colonialism there. Pattani used to be a proud Muslim Kingdom with its own kings, people and culture distinctly different from the Buddhist majority of Thailand. This war has nothing to do with religion but more with the aspirations of Pattani people to be free and independent in their own land. Even if the people of Pattani were Hindus or Christians, they’d still fight against the Buddhist majority the way Tibetan Buddhists fight against China.
