Turkey’s recent wave of civil unrest (which Turkish officials blame on Israel) is seen as the main factor influencing the International Olympic Committee’s decision to overlook Istanbul again after it failed to land the 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012 Games.
All the Turks, from the Istanbul mayor to the minister of sports to the Turkish Olympics Committee members and Prime Minister Recep Erdogan (photo above), had agreed: “Istanbul will win because it deserves to.” (Apparently not) The silence of the Turkish delegation, headed by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, were questioning why the IOC once again rejected a Muslim city to host the summer games. (DING! DING! DING! “Muslim” is the operative word here)
