According to Riverside County Fire Department Spokeswoman Jennifer Fuhrman, the blaze broke out at the Islamic Society of Palm Springs in Coachella and was reported at 12:09 p.m. When fire crews got to the scene, smoke and flames were showing at the 1800-square-foot structure but was quickly contained.
Local TV Station KESQ reports that officials on scene believe the structure was hit by an arsonist and was “fire-bombed.” The fire was contained at 12:49 p.m., according to Fhurman.
“The fire has been contained to the front lobby of the building,” she said. “Per the Incident Commander smoke damage throughout the mosque, resources still checking on extension.” No injuries have been reported at this time and there’s no word on the suspect’s description.
News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 is on scene and there was a group of Muslims gathered in front of the mosque in prayer shortly after the fire was contained
The arson fire comes just a week after the deadly terrorist attack in San Benardino where 14 people were killed in a mass shooting and 22 others were injured.
