CNN host thinks Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps, competing in his 5th Olympics, should have relinquished his role as Team USA flag bearer to a Muslim fencer whose only distinction is her insistence upon wearing an Islamic supremacist headbag in the competition.
Independent Journal Before the 2016 Rio Olympics kicked off in Brazil, CNN host W. Kamau Bell made a request to world famous Olympian Michael Phelps. Bell, who hosts a show called “United Shades of America,” told Phelps that he should let someone else carry the American flag.
In an editorial for CNN, Bell revealed who he thinks should have the honor instead:
“What I’m trying to say is that as far as America is concerned, you are a golden boy … literally. You getting the opportunity to carry the flag is like Michael Jordan getting a free pair of Nike sneakers.
You are both the living embodiment of the “honor” you are getting.
To put it another way, in the Make-Your-Own-Ice-Cream-Sundae-Bar of life, your sundae is lousy with hot fudge, butterscotch, strawberry sauce, whipped cream, nuts, sprinkles, extra scoops of ice cream, and so many Maraschino cherries that 5-year-old kids with mouthfuls of Maraschino cherries yell as you pass by, “THAT’S TOO MANY CHERRIES!”
And that’s why I would be proud of you for giving up your position to Ibtihaj Muhammad. Muhammad carrying the flag would be much bigger than your one moment.
It would be a symbol for our country in this moment when we are mostly known for one of the most contentious, controversial, scandal-ridden, hateful, xenophobic, jingoistic, and just generally unlikeable presidential elections in recent memory. This is at a time when we could use some more symbols of unity and togetherness.”
As far as Bell’s advice, thankfully Phelps ignored it. He proudly and deservedly carried the American flag at the Rio De Janeiro Olympics Opening Ceremony:
Obviously, Bell’s stupid idea didn’t go over well with a lot of people:

Comments from the CNN page are negative as well:
No one has ever heard of this Muslim athlete. Nor has she won any medals.
They put her to the front of the line based only on her religious belief.
This is a desperate attempt from the left in an attempt to make friends with the muslim community.
Too bad they don’t know anything about muslims.
They can not and will not be friends with anyone that isn’t a muslim.
It’s their religion and culture that makes them hate Americans and non-muslims in general.
The entire world rolled their eyes during the ceremonies with this blatant propaganda.
So wrong at so many levels:
There are never TOO MANY CHERRIES- Make your own and collect
You NEVER disrespect the PEOPLE that gave you the HONOR- PHELPS was Honor – Ibtihaj was NOT
In the political environment of these times you HONOR someone named JOSE or JESUS – Non-muslims are being slaugther all around the globe in every country in the world – a name like muhammed should be shamed
Our expectations are better and more progressive from you, Mr Bell. First there is a question of Merit, America is built on the principle of merit and equal opportunity to all, so please do not introduce the concept of political correctness in sports. let it be the preserve of Capitol Hill, and not sports. Second what are you preaching – that US women start wearing Hijab? Who are you competing with – the radical mullahs? US would have been shamed if it had done so. Even the Iranian contingent is giving liberty to women and for the first time in Arba world they had a woman flag bearer and hear you are Mr Bell suggesting that US go backwards to stone age and make a Hijab wearing woman as a flag bearer. It would have been a slap on the face of progressive muslim women. Please do not bring radical Islam to US under the veil of political correctness.
After reading the letter myself. No wonder he choose to carry the flag regardless. Your contempt for him is obvious through your passive aggressive nature and writing. I only got through a couple of paragraphs before the urge to yell and toss my phone started to come over me.
You should be ashamed of yourself. Phelps had missed every opening ceremony due to his diligence at being the best in the world. And this is the first Olympics he has been apart of that he will actually be able to celebrate with his fellow Olympians and enjoy the fruits of his labor.
Phelps has spent the last twenty years of his life in the pool to reach the point he has. Good for him.
This is plain, unadulterated racism disguised as an editorial. Tell me, how many medals has she won?
what a bunch of garbage .This is what the U.S doesn’t stand for.
He won it and he should not give up that honor.. Last time i will watch CNN
Stick it Bell. Why should Michael give such an honor up just because of the color of his skin or his religion. This is the USA where people aren’t awarded honors based on their skin color or religion. Go back to your hole.
This article reminds of people who ask why you didn’t invite them to your party. The premise of the article’s author is to assign blame where none exist
I wish ALL THE MEDIA would stop instigating racial issues…..Phelps carrying the flag was his peers bestowing a great honor on him for all that he has contributed to the US Olympics…..and so well deserved. Why should he be pressured to give it to someone else….anyone else for that matter. Ms. Mohammad is important to the US Olympics and to all women seeking medals but she does not have the distinction of having the most medals won in Olympic history as Phelps.
Isn’t it about time we stop announcing how “so and so” is only special because they are different and just recognize we are all the same.
We will all be rooting for Ibtihaj Mohammad because she is an American representing all of us in the Olympic games.
However an America hater like W. Kamau Bell wouldn’t understand that or how much of an honor it is to carry the flag. This is why people like him can only get excited about things that divide us. Some people would have no identity, no voice and no source of income without flaming Race issues.
This “letter” made me physically ill. It represents everything that America is not and should not be… equity over equality. Pandering over principle. Submission over strength. Phelps earned his medals due to a lifetime of sacrifice and training combined with innate ability…. NOT because he is a tall, white, priveleged rich man. Saying that this woman deserves the pinacle honor in the games, merely because she wears a head scarf is appalling and thankfully, not the view of most of us.
This was Phelps honor, given to him by the other American athletes and he stated as much last night at the Opening Ceremony. Him stepping aside would have done nothing for religious / race / immigrant / refugee relations in America. My thoughts center around a more important subject. Why would any American of African descent willingly want to be a Muslim, when so many Africans were sold into slavery by Muslims. If she were in some Muslim countries around the world, she wouldn’t even have a choice. I just don’t get it, but everybody has free will, so. Happy Saturday!
@Jeff Mulherin Completely agreed. You would think that electing a black American would have done something to show that America is willing to put race behind it. Instead it has only given the race baiters a higher podium to scream their hate from.
