Two police officers were stabbed in the Brussels district of Schaarbeek today, a Federal Prosecutor’s Office spokesman said, in what is being treated as a suspected (Islamic) terror attack. At noon, the officers were attacked by a man with a knife a spokesman said, naming the man as 43-year-old Muslim Belgian national Hicham D.
CNN The police are “not in a life-threatening condition,” the spokesman said, explaining that another police patrol was able to overpower the offender. The offender was shot in the leg, and a third officer was slightly injured.
A 17-year-old French high school student, who witnessed the attack, said “The suspect pulled out a knife and attacked a policeman, and hurt him in the stomach and leg.”
“The policeman then pulled out his pistol and shot the suspect in the leg.” He said the suspected then shouted something in what he believed was Arabic.
The knife attack was one of two incidents which sent a scare through Brussels on Wednesday. Earlier, a bomb threat made by an anonymous caller closed the Gare du Nord (Noord) railway station for hours but was deemed a hoax.
Brussels was already on high alert after bombings in March killed 32 people at the city’s airport and a metro station. Schaerbeek – along with Molenbeek – is one of the neighbourhoods that were tied to the terror attacks in Brussels and Paris and extremists.
