The college student who lied to police and the media about getting verbally and physically attacked on a NYC subway train by drunken Trump supporters because she is Muslim, took a plea deal last Friday. Yasmin Seweid, 19, copped to falsely reporting a hate crime incident and disorderly conduct for the bogus claim.
NY Daily News (h/t Christine D) Yasmin Seweid, of New Hyde Park, L.I., said hate-filled white men harassed her and tried to snatch the hijab off her head during an encounter on the No. 6 train on Dec. 1. Seweid previously admitted she wasted police resources to cover up for her missed curfew.
She must go through six months of counseling and complete three days of community service. If Seweid fulfills the terms of her deal, the top charge against her will be tossed and she’ll be left with just a violation.
The 18-year-old claimed she was singled out by the hate-spewing Trump supporters on December 1 who branded her a ‘terrorist’ and tried to rip off her hijab when she boarded a subway on her way home from college.
Daily Mail Days after reporting the crime, Seweid went missing, sparking a missing person’s appeal and another large police effort. Sources say she made up the elaborate story to cover up for the fact she had been out drinking late with friends.
Her parents ordered her to shave her head as punishment for the scandal. They are also said to disapprove of her Christian boyfriend, The New York Daily News reports.
Among those to support her in court on Wednesday was Seweid’s older brother Abdoul (photo below) who was himself arrested in 2012 for lying to police.
He claimed his friend had been ‘assaulted by three unknown males’, but was later charged among other teenagers with breaking into cars to steal their valuable contents near their home in New Hyde Park.
Seweid, who is a business major at New York’s Baruch College, initially told police she was harassed by three men when she got on the No. 6 train at the 23rd Street station in Manhattan on December 1.
She claimed the drunken white men taunted her, telling her ‘you don’t belong here’ and referred to her hijab as a ‘rag.’ Seweid also reported that one of the men grabbed her bag, breaking the strap, and another tried to take off her hijab before she fled the train at Grand Central Station to try and flag down police.
She shared details of the phony ordeal on Facebook and won the support of other social media users.
‘No matter how ‘cultured’ or ‘Americanized’ I am, these people don’t see me as an American,’ she wrote. ‘It breaks my heart that so many individuals chose to be bystanders while watching me get harassed verbally and physically by these disgusting pigs.’
Police originally investigated the case as an anti-Muslim bias incident and spent significant resources trying to track down those responsible.
Seweid even provided police with a description of the ‘suspects’, one of whom cops thought they spotted on video following her when she got off the subway at Grand Central Terminal, according to the New York Daily News.
‘She had numerous opportunities to admit nothing happened and she kept sticking by her story’, police said. Authorities looked at surveillance footage but could not find evidence to corroborate Seweid’s story.
Investigators had called in the Long Island teen on Wednesday to work on another sketch of her ‘attackers’ and confronted her with the inconsistencies, the New York Post reported. That’s when she finally admitted to police that she had fabricated the story, saying she didn’t want her parents angry with her for breaking curfew after being out late drinking with friends.
