Just what you’ve always wanted to see at BNI: A fat, black, dancing Muslim hijabi. Leah Vernon says she’s a “writer” and a “body-positive Muslim feminist” whose “working on a memoir and, sort of, Insta-Famous.”
DML Speaking to WWJ Newsradio 950’s Zahra Huber, she further described herself: “I’m fat, I’m black, and I’m very visibly Muslim. This is going to make some people angry, and it’s going to empower some.”
Vernon said she knew the video would receive a lot of negative comments, but she wanted to “show people stuff that’s never been done before, by a person who looks like me.” “I’m going to be super true, super raw, super high-fashioned with it, to basically make you see it,” said Vernon.
In July, she wrote an article in Muslimgirl.com, titled, “Are You Even Muslim?” In it, she reflects on the fact that in her experience, in order to be accepted as a visible “Muslimah,” a person must “be of Middle-Eastern descent, wear an abaya, and speak Arabic.” She goes on to describe her struggles with faith and stereotypes, declaring in the end: “I’ve said it before, I’m not the poster child for Islam.
