In Britain, barbaric Islamic halal-slaughtered meats have been creeping into school menus, usually without parents’ knowledge. Hundreds of schools have banned pork – sausages and bacon – and switched to halal- only meat for meals even where Muslim students are a tiny minority. The driving force appears to be cost because it is far easier and cheaper to have a single source of halal meat for everyone, rather than having to provide a segregated menu.
Families of other faiths or no faith have been angered and upset by the move which has often been done by schools and councils with little or no consultation.
The concern among non-Muslim parents is that it is not clear which schools are using halal only meat. Separately, a move to halal only meat means children have no choice but to eat it or switch to a vegetarian option. This is a particular worry for the Sikh and Jewish communities who refuse to eat halal meat on religious grounds.
Until now, that’s the way it has been for millions of non-Muslim school children all over the country.
The Times UK (h/t David Y) Geoff Driver, the county council’s Conservative leader, proposed the halal ban because he said that it was “abhorrent” to cut an animal’s throat without first making it insensible to pain.
His motion not to provide schools and other council establishments with halal meat, with the exception of poultry, was passed last night by 41 votes to 24, with 15 abstentions. Lancashire Council of Mosques (LCM) has accused Mr Driver of leading a “crusade” on the issue,
Halal is Arabic for permissible. Halal food is that which adheres to Islamic law, as defined in the Koran. The Islamic form of slaughtering animals or poultry, involves killing through a cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe, but leaves the animal conscious and writhing in pain as he slowly bleeds to death. See examples of this barbaric slaughter here: HALAL SLAUGHTER
The decision is expected to prompt a boycott of school meals by thousands of Muslim children in the county. Twenty-seven schools with a total of 12,000 pupils in Lancashire serve meat from halal suppliers that do not stun animals. These include several Church of England and Catholic schools.
Two Labour councillors failed in attempts to delay the vote in an angry debate. One, Azhar Ali, said it could result in Muslim children being deprived of their only hot, nutritious meal of the day. (Then go back where you came from)
Mr Driver said it was an animal welfare issue and denied that the motion was anti-Muslim. Muslims are allowed to eat non-halal meat if it is not available, according to the quran. Despite this, the Lancashire Council of Mosques insists that schools with any Muslim pupils be required to serve halal meat.
