Republicans to FBI: “Stop bowing down to CAIR, put back the anti-Islam materials into counter-terrorism training”

At least there are a few Republican members of Congress who are calling for the FBI to stop caving to the outrageous demands of terror-affiliated Muslims.

TPM  Right Wing Blogs (like this one) have been complaining for months about the FBI’s decision to purge their counterterrorism training materials which a review found contained accurate, though inflammatory information about Islam. On Wednesday, a few members of Congress joined the fight to get that important information reinstated.

FBI Director Mueller secretly met on February 8 at FBI headquarters with a coalition of groups including various Islamist and militant Arabic groups who in the past have defended Hamas and Hizballah

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) demanded that FBI Director Robert Mueller turn over the names of the subject experts the FBI used to review their counterterrorism training materials. Rep. Howard Cobel (R-NC) also suggested the Obama administration was forcing the FBI to get rid of materials because of political correctness.

Rep. Trent Franks told CQ earlier this year that the FBI was letting outside parties “censor the true or critical material from FBI training curricula just because someone feels it to be politically incorrect.”

Their remarks followed Rep. Allen West’s comment last month which suggested the FBI was committing “cultural suicide” and letting the Muslim Brotherhood influence policy. Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) criticized the FBI on Monday for removing nearly 900 pages of training material it deemed to be offensive, saying it showed extremist Muslim groups were influencing national strategy.

“If we continue to be recalcitrant in identifying who the enemy is and want to be less offensive to them, then we’re going to put ourselves in a bad situation,” West said. “Now you have an environment of political correctness which precludes these agents from doing their proper job and due diligence to go after the perceived threat.”

The FBI said in March that their review of 160,000 of pages of training materials found that less than one percent contained “factually inaccurate or imprecise information or used stereotypes.” The bureau issued guidelines on how training should be handled in the future.

Their statements echoed the concerns expressed by Brigitte Gabriel, president of the anti-Muslim group ACT, who wrote that “Political correctness must not trump constitutional rights, nor hamper our country’s ability to protect itself by muzzling law enforcement or hoodwinking its citizens.”

Mueller stood by the FBI’s review, which came about after Wired magazine brought some of the materials to light.

“I can say absolutely and with certainty that political correctness played no role in the efforts we/I undertook to make sure that we give the best training to our personnel,” Mueller said at Wednesday’s hearing before the House Judiciary Committee. “It does us no good to have personnel who are trained with inadequate materials or misguided materials.”

The U.S. government has issued an arrest warrant for an American citizen who is seeking asylum in Sweden after he went public with allegations of illegal detention and torture while in the United Arab Emirates – which he believes was carried out at the behest of the FBI.

MSNBC  In newly filed documents, the U.S. government charges that Yonas Fikre, 33, an Ethiopia-born resident of Portland, Ore., was involved in money transfers set up to avoid U.S. reporting requirements. He is accused of conspiring with two other defendants — his brother Dawit Woldehawariat of San Diego and Abrehaile Haile of Seattle.

“Defendants Fikre and Woldehawariat wanted to conceal from the United States their connection to the money transfers” of about $75,000, the grand jury indictment states.

The accusation against the three is “structuring” — or using a series of bank transactions instead of conducting a larger transaction in an effort to avoid reporting the money movements to the federal government. Transactions over $10,000 require reporting.

After Fikre traveled to Sudan in 2009, and later to the UAE, he received money transfers that he says were for starting a trading business. The document alleges that a series of $7,000 money transfers from his brother, and handled by Abrehaile Haile — who operates Red Sea Inc., a money-transmitting business in Seattle — amounted to conspiracy to structure.   Fikre’s brother, a taxi driver, also was  charged with failing to file taxes for 2009 and 2010. He made about $26,000 in 2009 and $29,000 in 2010, the document states.

“Frankly, I think its retaliation and retribution,” Fikre’s attorney, Thomas Nelson in Portland, said of the indictment. (Yeah, payback’s a bitch, ain’t it?)

Nelson said that the FBI agents used the accusation of “structuring” to pressure Fikre to become an informant in a case they were pursuing at a meeting with him in Khartoum in April 2010.

Fikre said the agents also suggested they could help him get off the U.S. “no-fly” list if he aided their investigation — a surprise, Fikre said, because it was the first he had learned that his name was on the list of “known and reasonably suspected terrorists.”

He is now in Stockholm where his appeal  for asylum is under review by the Swedish government. Fikre, a naturalized American citizen, came to the United States as a refugee in 1991, after his family fled civil war in Ethiopia. Now that he is on the no-fly list, he is barred from boarding any flight that enters U.S. air space.

Nelson is concerned that the indictment might make his client essentially stateless. “Yonas tried to come back to the United States and couldn’t get in, so he went to Sweden,” said Nelson. “The (Swedish) government might now claim he’s a fugitive and won’t let him in.“ (One can only hope)

NJ GOVERNOR CHRIS CHRISTIE for VP? Don’t let Mitt Romney choose a running mate with dirty Islamist ties

BNI has posted these stories in the past, but here is a good summary of Christie’s repugnant, over- the-top support for Muslims with terrorist ties and whose loyalties are to Islam, not America, as well as his disparagement of those who oppose the recognition of sharia law by US Courts.

Daniel Pipes (H/T Frederic F)  A Quinnipiac poll in April showed Chris Christie the most popular potential Republican vice-presidential candidate, thanks to his budget cuts and standing up to government employee unions. But the governor of New Jersey has a problem, specifically an Islam problem, in the way of his possible ascent to higher office. We regret to report that, time and again, he has sided with Islamist forces against those safeguarding American security and civilization.

Some examples:

2008: When serving as U.S. attorney for New Jersey, Christie embraced and kissed Mohammed Qatanani, imam of the Islamic Center of Passaic County, and praised him as “a man of great goodwill.”

He did this after Qatanani had publicly ranted against Jews and in support of funding Hamas, a U.S. government–designated terror organization, and on the eve of his deportation hearing for hiding an Israeli conviction for membership in Hamas. In addition, Christie designated a top aide, Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles McKenna, to testify as a character witness for Qatanani

2010: After Derek Fenton burned three pages of a Koran at a 9/11 memorial ceremony, his employer, New Jersey Transit, got Christie’s approval to fire him.

Christie vocally endorsed Fenton’s termination, even though this meant protecting Islam at the expense of Fenton’s constitutional right to free speech, declaring, “I don’t have any problem with him being fired.” The American Civil Liberties Union successfully represented Fenton to get his job back.

2010: Christie voted ‘present’ on the issue of opposition to the Ground Zero Victory mosque

“My principles on this are two-fold. One, that we have to acknowledge, respect and give some measure of deference to the feelings of the family members who lost there loved ones there that day. But it would be wrong to so overreact to that, that we paint Islam with a brush of radical Muslim extremists that just want to kill Americans because we are Americans. But beyond that…I am not going to get into it…”

2011: Christie appointed an Islamist, Sohail Mohammed, to the New Jersey state superior court.

Mohammed’s record includes serving as general counsel to the American Muslim Union (which has stated that a “Zionist Commando Orchestrated The 9-11 Terrorist Attacks”), acting as spokesman for Muslim prisoners who went on a hunger strike due to being jailed during Ramadan, defending Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative Sami Al-Arian (whose indictment, Mohammed said, was “nothing but a witch-hunt”), and helping Qatanani’s legal defense. Mohammed is not a lawyer for Islamists but one of them.

When members of New Jersey’s Senate Judiciary Committee asked Mohammed appropriately tough questions about his enthusiasm for Islam’s archaic law code, the Shari’a, Christie ridiculed the lawmakers: “Shari’a law has nothing to do with this [appointment of Mohammed] at all. It’s crazy. It’s crazy. … So, this Shari’a law business is crap. It’s just crazy. And I’m tired of dealing with the crazies. I mean, you know, it’s just unnecessary to be accusing this guy of things just because of his religious background.” Delighted by this outburst, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) thanked and applauded Christie.

Sohail Mohammed, an immigration lawyer who represented detainees caught in the post-Sept. 11 furor, watches the Fox series ‘24’ at his office in Clifton, N.J. “Somewhere, some lunatic out there watching this will do something to an innocent American Muslim because he believes what he saw on TV,” Mohammed said.

2012:  Revelations that the New York Police Department had conducted surveillance of Islamists in the New Jersey towns of Newark and New Brunswick prompted not gratitude but outrage from Christie, who termed the action arrogant and paranoid while mocking NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly as “all knowing, all seeing.”

In short, Christie has hugged a terrorist organization member, abridged free-speech rights, scorned concern over Islamization, and opposed law enforcement counterterrorism efforts. Whenever an issue touching on Islam arises, Christie takes the Islamist side against those—the DHS, state senators, the NYPD, even the ACLU—who worry about lawful Islamism eroding the fabric of American life.

Two factors render this pattern especially curious: First, soft-on-Islamism policies are common among Democrats but rare among Republicans (Grover Norquist being the major exception). Second, Christie has an ostentatiously pro-Israel stance, as reflected by his speeches and his recent “Jersey to Jerusalem” trip; this makes him unusual, for pro-Israel views typically go hand-in-hand with concern about Shari’a. How does one reconcile the Christie contradiction?

It could be that, other than fiscally, he is not a conservative but a moderate. It could be ego: the governor is just more brilliant than the rest of us. Or, as several analysts suggest, it could be cynical double pandering: Muslims get what they want most and Zionists what they want most, with each party ignoring what Christie does for the other. Interestingly, Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut pursued this double track policy (soft on Islamism, staunch on Israel) and became the Democrats’ VP candidate in 2000.

Whatever the reason, we conclude that Chris Christie lacks the moral compass, gravitas, and integrity needed to serve as vice-president of the United States.

Alleging he was tortured, American Muslim seeks political asylum in Sweden

A black American convert to Islam seeking asylum in Sweden claims he was detained at the U.S. government’s request while in the United Arab Emirates last summer, tortured in custody, and interrogated about the activities of a Portland mosque.

While incarcerated in Abu Dhabi, Fikre said that he never felt so alone or cut off from human contact in his entire life

The Blaze  Yonas Fikre told a news conference that he was held for 106 days and was beaten, threatened with death and kept in solitary confinement in a frigid cell. (Nothing in Dubai is frigid with an average temperature of 75-100 degrees F all year long)

The 33-year-old, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Eritrea, says he had attended the same mosque in Portland as a man who has been charged in a plot to detonate a bomb in the northwestern U.S. city. He moved to Sudan in 2009 and later to the United Arab Emirates. He went to Sweden, where he has relatives, after being released from detention on Sept. 15.

Fikre, who converted to Islam in 2003, is the third Muslim man from Portland to publicly say he was detained while traveling abroad and questioned about Portland’s Masjid-as-Sabr mosque. Mohamed Osman Mohamud, a Somali American who is awaiting trial on a charge of plotting to set off a bomb in downtown Portland in November 2010, occasionally worshipped there. A decade ago, seven Muslims with ties to the mosque were arrested following a failed effort to enter Afghanistan and fight U.S. forces.

  Fikre says he was arrested on June 1 in the United Arab Emirates and taken to a prison in Abu Dhabi, where he was questioned about the activities of the Portland mosque and its imam, Mohamed Sheikh Abdirahman Kariye.

Daily Mail State Department officials were granted access to meet with him on July 28 confirmed Toner. ‘According to our records, during the July 28 visit, Mr. Fikre showed no signs of mistreatment and was in good spirits,’ said Toner. ‘He reported that he had been treated professionally and was being well-fed, and did not have any medical conditions or concerns.’

State Department officials requested to visit Fikre again in September, but learned days later that he had been deported to Sweden, explained Toner.

He, his attorney and the Council on American-Islamic Relations are demanding the U.S. Justice Department investigate his treatment.

American Muslim convert planned to blow up the Long Island Rail Road and WalMart

Bryant Neal Vinas, 29, a Long Island-raised former truck driver, who quit the U.S. Army and later joined Al-Qaeda, said that during training at a terror camp in North Waziristan in 2008, he spoke to the emir in charge of International Operations for Al-Qaeda, Abdul Hafiz al-Somali, and suggested putting suitcases with bombs on the Long Island Railroad.

Vinas said Hafiz liked the idea. “He thought the best attack would be to have a martyrdom plan where the train was still inside the tunnel….to cause a big financial impact to New York.”

Vinas, the son of Peruvian immigrants who was raised Catholic, is testifying at the federal trial of Adis Medunjanin, a Queens College grad who’s accused of conspiring in a plot to bomb New York City subways.

Vinas said for the LIRR idea, the Al Qaeda official wanted to choose a “suicide bomber” who wouldn’t call too much attention to himself. “He said preferably, it would be a white man from one of the Western countries–the European Union, Canada, Australia or the United States.” Prosecutors are trying to establish that several, New York men were dealing with the same, Al Qaeda operative in Pakistan…even though Vinas testified he never met Medunjanin.

Vinas also took credit for an idea to attack Walmart. “You could hide a bomb inside a target you could return–preferably a TV–and you could get out of the store and it would explode,” Vinas testified. “It would cause a very big economic hit. Walmart is the largest retail store in the country,” he observed.

College boy thinks community opposition to more jihadist training centers (aka mosques) in America is all about ignorance.

HUFFPO  Last Saturday, hundreds of people attended a rally in Waukesha in opposition to a proposal by the Islamic Society of Milwaukee to build a mosque in the city, as reported by the Brookfield Patch. Anti-Islam sentiment has been seen across the United States over the last decade, but that this type of reaction would manifest in Waukesha is disappointing. 

There are only two reasons to possibly oppose the construction of the mosque in Waukesha. The first is the idea that Islam is a terrorist religion and therefore Muslims should not have the same religious freedom as everyone else. The second is simply the classic fear of that which is not well understood. Neither is a sound reason to oppose the mosque.

Many Americans have not had the privilege (????) of being friends with or neighbors of Muslims, and as a result, it is an unfortunate reality that when they think of Islam, they associate it with 9/11. We know that on September 11, 2001, 19 hijackers killed thousands of innocent people in the name of Islam. However, merely claiming that their actions were done in the name of Islam does not make these killers Muslims. They were not Muslims any more than members of the Ku Klux Klan were Christians. We as a country need to move beyond associating Islam with 9/11; I do not want my children to grow up in a country where they are told that Muslims are fascists hell-bent on commandeering America.

It is pretty obvious that most of the recent anti-Islamic sentiment is a product largely, if not wholly, of Americans’ misguided linking of 9/11 and Islam. However, Islam is one of the
fastest growing religions in America, and it may be that the people of Waukesha are simply afraid of that which they do not understand. If this is true, it is of course not as damaging as the false perception that all Muslims are terrorists, but it is ridiculous nevertheless.

Muslims are not here to try to take over the United States; they or their parents or grandparents came here from the Middle East for the same reason that my great-grandparents came here from Italy and Ireland: they wanted to have the opportunity to make a better life for themselves and their families. What do a great number of them get in return for being good, law-abiding, tax-paying, peaceful
citizens? Not unlike the Italian and Irish immigrants of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they get bigotry and intolerance. By discriminating against Islam, we carelessly perpetuate the same transgressions committed by or against many of our forefathers. It is time we move forward.

Pastor David Ball of New Berlin tries to make the case against Islam on political grounds, claiming that it is, as a political system as well as religion, incompatible with the Constitution of the United States. I am a supporter of secular government, or more ideally, an all-inclusive government, and there are undeniably legitimate criticisms of Islam as a system of government. That is a discussion to be had, but it has absolutely nothing to do with whether the Muslims of Waukesha should be allowed to build a place of worship. They are not seeking whatsoever to impose Islam as a political system on the United States.

Some residents of Waukesha expressed concern that the Muslims may want to follow sharia. This demonstrates a grave misunderstanding of what sharia even is. Many Americans think that sharia is solely the law that governs Islamic nations, largely as a consequence of superfluous and ignorant legislation banning the practice or application of sharia law.

First, it is unclear to me why integrating parts of sharia law into our legal system would necessarily be a bad thing. Ours has significant influence from other legal systems including, among others, the English, the French and even the Romans — who was it that crucified Christ, again? I think we would do well to broaden our legal system by incorporating parts of Islamic law that promote the good of society.

Second, sharia is not just about the laws of nations; it is the ethical code of all of Islam. Islam does not exist without sharia. Muslims abiding by sharia are no more harmful to America than Jews choosing to be kosher or Christians choosing to follow a certain dogma; in fact, if anything they are probably even less harmful, given the current blend of politics and religion in the United States.

There is no legitimate objection whatsoever to the proposed Waukesha mosque on principled grounds. The Muslims seeking to build a place of worship are not terrorists. They are only trying to exercise their freedom of religion that they are guaranteed, just like everyone else, by the First Amendment. What could be more American than that?

MASSACHUSETTS MUSLIM al-Qaeda-linked domestic terrorist given standing ovation by Muslim supporters after sentencing

Tarek Mehanna, a Massachusetts Muslim man convicted of conspiring to help Al-Qaeda, was sentenced Thursday to 17 1/2 years in prison after giving an impassioned speech in which he declared his love for Islam and said, ‘This is not terrorism; it’s self-defense.’

Tarek Mehanna, 29, an American who grew up in the wealthy Boston suburb of Sudbury, was found guilty in December of traveling to Yemen to seek training in a terrorist camp with the intention of going on to Iraq to fight U.S. soldiers there. Mehanna was sentenced on four terror-related charges and three counts of lying to authorities. His family and supporters gave him a standing ovation and called out ‘we love you’ as he was led from the courtroom.

Boston Herald  “His plan to murder American soldiers was thwarted not by capture or a change of heart, but only by his failure to find suitable training” during a 2004 trip to Yemen in pursuit of recruitment to a terrorist camp, prosecutors said in their 13-page sentencing memorandum.

Mehanna used the Internet to spread information about jihad and set up a blog where he posted English translations of Web pages devoted to influential jihad advocates and spiritual patrons in Afghanistan and Iraq, an affidavit said.

This morning, Mehanna gave a defiant and rambling address to the court.

“I never, ever plotted to kill Americans at shopping malls or anywhere else,” he said, twitching at his orange prison scrubs as he spoke for about 20 minutes in his first public statements since his 2009 arrest on terror charges. “Muslims should defend themselves against foreign invaders. This is not terrorism or extremism. It’s self-defense. The government prosecuted me not because they needed to, but simply because they could.”

Discussing “oppression,” he added: “It’s because of America that I am who I am.”

Mehanna also told the court he was prosecuted because he would not become an informant. Assistant U.S. Attorney Aloke Chakravarty told U.S. District Court Judge George A. O’Toole Jr. that Mehanna’s claims were “categorically false,” spurring an outburst by Mehanna.

“You’re a liar, you’re a liar!” Mehanna screamed from his chair. 

In his own plea, Mehanna’s father, Ahmed Mehanna, wrote to the judge that his son, an American-born graduate of Lincoln-Sudbury High School, was upset by the “unjust persecution of Muslims throughout the world” in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and that “his view was amplified” by the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, “and the bad advice of older Muslim friends surrounding him.”

Daily Mail  During the sentencing hearing, Drama Queen Mehanna gave a sweep of history and compared the suffering experienced by Muslims at the hands of Americans to the oppression inflicted on American colonists by the British. 

He mentioned Paul Revere, Malcolm X and Nelson Mandela, among others, and said he came to appreciate the plight of the oppressed against their oppressors as a 6-year-old boy reading comic books.

Massachusetts U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz called Mehanna’s remarks ‘disingenuous’ and said he came across as angry and defiant. ‘Trust me. Tarek Mehanna is no Nelson Mandela,’ Ortiz said.

Friends and family members came out in force to support Mehanna, who was sentenced to 17 and a half years in prison for aiding Al-Qaeda

U.S. District Court Judge George A. O’Toole Jr. said Mehanna had become consumed with his religion in a way that was horrifying.

Prosecutors asked for a 25-year prison sentence, saying he lived a ‘double life,’ appearing as a ‘dutiful and scholarly young man’ to his family and community, but in reality, he ‘was a proponent of violence as a means of achieving political goals.’ 

During the trial, Mehanna’s attorneys portrayed him as an aspiring scholar of Islam who traveled to Yemen to look for religious schools.
