Andalus or Andalusia, yes, was an Islamic country that existed in the so called Islamic Golden Age, during the Middle Ages. And it was actually for much of its history wealthy, prosperous during the Middle Ages. From about the 800’s CE to 1492 CE when the Muslims were kicked out of Spain, the Iberian peninsula was under a form of Al Shariah. It was only prosperous for about 300 years however.
War and strife, both internally and externally, eventually weakened the Caliphate and the Caliphate became less liberal and more fundamentalist and eventually it was destroyed.
But, here is where Anjem gets it wrong, and most Muslims, and some multi culti historians who subscribe to cultural relativism or historical revisionism.
Andalusia flourished because, for much of its history it was fairly liberal by Islamic standards. It did not practice strict versions of Al Sharia. For much of the history of Andalusia, Christians and Jews lived in relative peace and security, though they did have to pay the Jizyah tax. (Although in some very liberal Islamic domains, even the Jizyah tax was waived for Christians and Jews, and so long as they did not rock the boat, they were left alone.) Under some Caliphs in Andalusia, Christians and Jews were allowed limited participation in government, which is not allowed under strict Islamic law.
In this period of history, liberal Islamic regimes did actually flourish in art, science, and literature, particularly Andalusia and Persia. The point here I am trying to make here is this. These Islamic societies did not flourish because of Islam itself, but because of their relatively liberal and cosmopolitan societies during the Middle Ages. The Islamic Golden Age was not so much Islamic. And the only reason it is called Islamic because the societies were nominally Islamic and not practicing strict forms of Islam.
