MELBOURNE TERROR: SUV driver slams into crowd of pedestrians at 60mph – up to 19 injured. Police said the driver and another man have been arrested after what they said they believed was a “deliberate act.” Asked if the incident was terrorism-related, Victorian Police commander Russell Barrett said: “The motivations are unknown.”
Express (h/t Sara S) Witnesses said the white Suzuki SUV showed no signs of slowing as it mowed down crowds of people at the busy intersection near the corner of Flinders and Elizabeth streets. One woman who saw the harrowing incident unfold said she heard screams before she saw “people flying everywhere”.
She added: “We could hear this noise, as we looked left, we saw this white car, it just mowed everybody down. “People are flying everywhere. We heard thump, thump. People are running everywhere.”
At least 13 people have been transferred to hospital with injuries but local media is reporting at least 19 people have been hurt in the crash. Seven are in a critical condition.
A police spokesman said: “At this stage we believe it is a deliberate act. The crime scene will be in place for a considerable period of time and we are urging people who can avoid the area to avoid the area.” It is believed the car was travelling at about 60mph before colliding with shoppers.
Police did not suggest a possible motive for the incident, which had chilling echoes of several attacks by Islamic militants in various parts of the world over the past year or two.
