Witnesses heard the knife-wielding attacker screaming “Allahu Akbar” as he threw himself at two policemen, according to local newspaper La Derniere.

The suspect was shot and wounded by another officer, she added. The police officer was rushed to hospital but her injuries are not life threatening. “It is too early to say now what the motives of the attacker is.
TheGoldwater Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Security and Home Affairs Jan Jambon (of the ruling Flemish N-VA political party) already declared that the perpetrator is not known for terrorism. “He is not in the OCAD databases and is not known for terrorism at the police.”
According to local press, the perpetrator was Issam T., who had only just been released after imprisonment and was known for a series of violent robberies with violence.
In 2014 he was imprisoned after an attempted manslaughter. Police are working from the assumption that he may have radicalized in prison.
Belgium has seen repeated attacks by terrorists in the past two years. The Brussels airport and metro were simultaneously bombed on 22 March 2016, killing 32 people.
