One of the Muslim men was arrested on Friday but the other is now on the run, with police claiming he is an Afghan migrant who arrived in the country as an ‘unaccompanied minor.’ According to German newspaper Bild, he is 18 and is known to police for previous assault charges.
Metro UK He allegedly held the 15-year-old victim down as the other man, a 21-year-old known only as Mohammad F, raped her. On Friday afternoon, investigators found and arrested Mohammad F – also believed to be an Afghan migrant – in a refugee shelter in Massow, 33 kilometers away from where the attack took place, at a playground in Königs Wusterhausen, Brandenburg, just outside Berlin.
According to Bild, the teenager went into a police station in Brandenburg to report the crime but was so traumatized that police stopped questioning mid-way through and resumed the following day.
Bild reports a police source as saying: ‘The incident was kept under lock and key by the city and police, because they fear another reaction like what happened in Freiburg.’ The source was referring to an incident in the south-western city of Freiburg last month, in which an 18-year-old girl was gang raped in an attack allegedly orchestrated by a 22-year-old Syrian man. It sparked outrage across Germany and led to a number of violent protests in the country.
The accomplice is believed to be on ‘holiday’ in another state, according to the head of the refugee centre where the main suspect was arrested.
According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) in Germany, a considerable number of refugees that came to the country in 2015 and 2016 were allegedly children who arrived without their parents. (But most of them were not actually children, and lied to authorities, knowing that minors would get priority treatment).
Child refugees, under the Child and Youth Welfare Act, ‘are accommodated, cared for and assisted by the youth welfare system in the same way that other legal minors are’, the government said.
