What do they both have in common? As of 5:45PM Eastern time, no names of suspects have been released even though the identity of the shooter in Strasbourg is known. Not sure about the likely truck jihadist in Sydney.
UPDATE!!! I got the photo of the suspect but no name yet. Although judging by the prayer bump on his forehead, he’s a Muslim for sure.
UPDATE #2: Reuters reports French police have identified Strasbourg-born Chekatt Cherif, 29, as the suspected gunman.
FRANCE Four people have died and eleven people have been critically injured after shots were fired close to a Christmas market in Strasbourg, local authorities have confirmed.
The incident happened close to a Christmas market in the central square of Strasbourg, Place Kleber.
Police have now said they know the identity of the gunman, who is known to have a criminal record and fled the scene after a shootout, as police tried to arrest him. The suspect had previously been wounded by a soldier close to the Christmas market and has now been cornered by police.
It is not yet clear if the market was the target of the attack or if there was any link to terrorism.
The attack was a new blow to France, after a wave of Islamic extremist attacks in 2015 and 2016, and truck attack in Nice that killed dozens in 2016. It also comes amid a month of that have blocked roads around the country, led to rioting in the capital and put heavy strain on police.
AUSTRALIA One person has died and six others have been injured after a truck plowed into pedestrians in Sydney on Wednesday morning. The B-double truck veered onto the wrong side of the road in Alexandria, in the city’s inner south, about 7.45am.
‘Police have been told a B-double travelling south on Botany Road veered into northbound lanes, before hitting pedestrians, a power pole, a bus stop and a building,’ a New South Wales Police statement said.
