It took the jury only about an hour to deliver a guilty verdict on several charges for a Toronto-area Muslim woman, Rehab Dughmosh, 32, who admitted to attacking workers at a Canadian Tire store with a golf club and butcher knife in an effort to aid the Islamic State (ISIS) terror group in July 2017, following an unusual trial in which the accused largely declined to participate.
Global News Dughmosh initially faced a total of 21 charges, but in the end she faced four, including two counts of assault with a weapon and one of carrying a weapon – all in the name of ISIL.
She was also charged with leaving Canada for the purpose of committing a criminal offence in connection with an attempted trip to Syria in April 2016.
During an early Toronto Court appearance, Dughmosh stood with her back to the judge and repeatedly interjected through an interpreter to call those in the court “infidels.” “Damn your legislation, damn your nationality, go to hell,” she said. “Hey you infidels, I do not worship what you worship.”
She also expressed a desire to be sent to a country where she could be tried under Shariah law, a request that was denied by Ontario Superior Court Justice Robert Goldstein.
After twice refusing to appear for her court hearings, a judge had to give prison officials permission to forcibly remove the Muslim prisoner from her cell.
