Katharine Gorka, a political appointee at the Department of Homeland Security who has stirred controversy for her views on Islamic terrorism and her role in the department’s efforts to combat Islamic terrorism in the US.
The Hill Acting Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner John Sanders told CNN Tuesday that Gorka is expected to take the position and he advocated for her to join the agency.
A DHS spokesperson said, “Katie has been a valuable member of the DHS team, helping to advance the Department’s mission of preventing targeted violence and countering terrorism, regardless of ideology. We look forward to her continued service with the Department in her new position at CBP as we work to secure the border and enforce our nation’s immigration laws.”
CNN notes that in the role, Gorka will be the public face of the agency that President Trump often brings into attention with his focus on his immigration policy and self-deemed border crisis.
Gorka founded and served as president of the now-closed Council on Global Security think-tank. Additionally, she founded and led Threat Knowledge Group consulting firm, which provided “counter terrorism” training for the U.S. government and military.
Gorka and her husband, Dr. Sebastian Gorka, have written for the right-wing website Breitbart, where she’s been at the center of controversial statements about immigration and about Islam. The pair have been seen as major drivers of the president’s focus on Islamic terrorism. Sebastian Gorka has repeatedly argued that the Muslim faith is at the heart of the jihadist threat.
In another Breitbart article, Gorka warned of the dangers that come with adopting “Sharia-compliant banking” in Western countries, focusing on England, as it “weakens their [Muslims’] ties to the non-Muslim community,” and thus creates a “parallel society.” Gorka went on to claim that “Islamic finance” has “chauvinist and supremacist” origins and would “strengthen Muslim identity,” which could be a “recipe for disaster” for Britain.
In a 2014 piece, Katharine Gorka wrote on Breitbart that, “To date, American and Western leaders have preemptively shut down any debate within Islam by declaring that Islam is the religion of peace and that terrorism has nothing to do with Islam. In so doing, Western governments have effectively shut the door on those Muslims who dare to dissent, who suggest reform rather than radicalism as the solution to Islam’s ills.” “The result is that the Islamic extremists are running the show, from Iraq to Syria to Libya to Iran,” she wrote.
Also in 2014, she supported legislation to designate the Muslim Brotherhood, a political party in a number of countries in the Middle East, a terrorist group, and impose sanctions on its “affiliates, associated groups, or agents.”
So, it comes as no surprise that the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) has its collective panties in a wad over the appointment of Katharine Gorka, whom they slander as a “notorious Islamophobe,” as the new press secretary at Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Gorka, currently a political appointee at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), has claimed that the DHS trains its agents — falsely, according to Gorka — that Islam is a “religion of peace.”
According to CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw (convert to Islam) “Katharine Gorka is an unapologetic bigot whose ignorant and hateful views belong in the dark recesses of the internet, not the press room of a federal agency. Her continued presence in the Trump administration is as detestable as it is predictable.”
Says McCaw, “She is married to Sebastian Gorka, a former Trump administration official who is also known for his ‘Islamophobic’ views. He once called religious profiling of Muslims “common sense” and repeatedly declined to say whether President Trump believes Islam is a real religion.”
