Horses are beautiful and gentle animals, but they are also very strong. I just don’t know how any one could be so blatantly mean to such an animal that has such strength. I like horses, but have always been a little afraid of them, because I know how strong they are if they should ever get pissed off. Even a light kick from a horse can seriously injure someone and a full force kick in the right place can kill instantly. That is not an animal you want to get mad. I have a healthy respect for the strength of that animal, and I try to be nice to any horse I meet.

If you’re in the US, go to the BLM(Bureau of Land Management) website !! I just adopted a yearling filly and an older gelding from them. They also have online weanling auctions and have sites all over the US. Plus, have prison programs. Prisoners work with the horses, all the ground work is done and they’re started under saddle so you run small risk of getting the s–t kicked out of you. The cons do that for you!!! My gelding came from Susanville Prison. I want to kiss the man that took the time with him, even if he is a felon!!!! Check them out!!!!!
It depends on the horse. Most are a cross between Spanish Barb, Lipid Morgan and Native Appaloosa. I can only attest to my success with them so I don’t want to go beyond that. The older gelding that I have is 5 yrs old and will clear 2 ft log on the trails, but I’ve never asked him to do more than that. He’s never had shoes!!! Shoer, ” damn! This horse has hard feet!!”. But, I’ m into dressage and competitive trail riding. Not so sure about hunter/ jumper. Maybe BNI, recuperating ( sorry, couldn’t resist) can give more insight.??? But, I know people that have spent thousands on Hanoverians and thoroughbreds that have been sorely disappointed! Give a Mustang a chance! ???
Emma, some of my best horses have been mutts. I don’t like the fancy Warmbloods from Europe which are the horse of choice now in the Hunter/Jumper world. They require too much leg and seem to have more soundness problems that other breeds. But any horse can be taught to jump small fences, but not everyone becomes a good jumper. Success has to do more with heart than natural ability.
When I first started riding as an adult, I was on an Arabian horse and he got spooked on the trail and took off
with me at dead gallop running back to the barn. Somewhere along the trail he dumped me which is when I broke my back and pelvis.

Before the class, I’d participated in a “Run For the Hungry” in Sacto. My feet were so swollen and blistered that they wouldn’t fit in my boots, so I greased them up with vasoline, inside and out. First hurdle, my boot flew off and was slapping the horse!! She was so pissed!l So pissed that I had to write a thousand word essay on equestrian safety!! Oh Gawd! I’m rolling on the floor! I’d forgotten all about it!! Saving grace…. before we advanced, our beginner classes. We have to ride bareback, on a lunge line at walk, trot, jog and canter arms outstretched and to pass had to be able to touch the horses rump. Was all about balance, not boots!!l Still laughing!!! Poor instructor!!l lol!!
Emma, that’s hysterical. I’ll go you one better. My trainer used a chute to teach us to ‘feel’ when the horse was going to jump. We had to enter the chute with our arms outstretched and blindfolded and canter a line of jumps.
