First there was Notre Dame, now the 15th Century Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul cathedral in Nantes is in flames, in what has become the latest in a series of arson-related fires at French churches in recent years.
CGTN A fire at a 15th-century cathedral in the French city of Nantes is being treated as a criminal act, prosecutors say. The fire, which started on Saturday morning at the cathedral of St Peter and St Paul, took dozens of firefighters several hours to tackle.
But unlike the 850-year-old monument in the capital, which still had timber roof beams, the Cathedral of St. Peter and St Paul of Nantes had been renovated with concrete roof beams following a large fire in 1972 which had reduced the roof to ashes.
A number of the cathedral’s stained glass windows were blown out by the strength of the fire, while the building’s grand organ was also destroyed.
“We’ve observed this morning that the fire started in three spots,” said Nantes prosecutor Pierre Sennes. “This observation leads us to open an investigation for arson, an investigation to regional judicial police.
“The next phase will be working into the investigation consultations – we will take a lot of statements. We will also verify the technical installations, the fire prevention installations, and again, we are waiting for experts who could give us interesting elements.”
This is not the first fire to hit the cathedral, which was started in 1434 and not completed until 1891. It was damaged by bombing during World War II and then again in 1972. On that occasion its timber roof was largely destroyed, and the restoration work was so in-depth that the cathedral stayed closed for 13 years.
Rolland was quick to ease fears that this fire’s effects were not as devastating. “I can confirm to the locals that ask us if we are in the same situation as in 1972 – since this question keeps coming up – no, we cannot reasonably say that right now, we are in the same situation as 1972.”
In 2015 a huge fire destroyed part of the 19th Century basilica of Saint-Donatien in Nantes.
Below are examples of churches that have come under attack in France in the past few years. As this video is from Turkish State media, ignore the notation below about possible arsonists, which totally leaves out the probability that many of the fires were set by Muslims.
In regards to all those church fires; those arsonist monsters need to leave the churches alone. The churches do no harm to anyone and churches help people with food, shelter, and clothing.

European Churches: Vandalized, Defecated On, and Torched “Every Day”
Countless churches throughout Western Europe are being vandalized, defecated on, and torched.
In France, two churches are desecrated every day on average. According to PI-News, a German news site, 1,063 attacks on Christian churches or symbols (crucifixes, icons, statues) were registered in France in 2018.
Among some of the recent desecrations in France, the following took place in just February and March:
Vandals plundered Notre-Dame des Enfants Church in Nîmes and used human excrement to draw a cross there; consecrated bread was found thrown outside among garbage.
The Saint-Nicolas Church in Houilles was vandalized on three separate occasions in February; a 19th century statue of the Virgin Mary, regarded as “irreparable,” was “completely pulverized,” said a clergyman; and a hanging cross was thrown to the floor.
Vandals desecrated and smashed crosses and statues at Saint-Alain Cathedral in Lavaur, and mangled the arms of a statue of a crucified Christ in a mocking manner. In addition, an altar cloth was burned.
Arsonists torched the Church of St. Sulpice in Paris soon after midday mass on Sunday, March 17.
Similar reports are coming out of Germany….
