The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency session to discuss firebrand National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir’s visit to Jerusalem’s flashpoint Temple Mount, which drew a flood of international condemnations.
Times of IsraelBen Gvir, leader of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, toured the compound Tuesday morning, decrying the alleged “racism” against Jews at the site and scorning warnings of a significant backlash. The visit stoked concerns in the Muslim world that Israel’s government would move to change the status quo prohibiting Jewish prayer at the shrine — considered the holiest site in Judaism and third holiest to Muslims, who refer to it as the Al Aqsa Mosque or the Noble Sanctuary — despite repeated vows that the regulations will remain in place.
Ben Gvir has long been an advocate for formally altering the Temple Mount status quo, in which Muslims are allowed to pray and enter with few restrictions, while Jews can visit only during limited time slots via a single gate and walk on a predetermined route, closely accompanied by police.
In a video clip taken during his Tuesday morning visit, Ben Gvir decried what he called “racist discrimination” against Jewish worshipers forbidden from praying atop the site. With the Dome of the Rock in the background and waving his fingers at the camera, he said the visits would continue.
“The Israeli government won’t surrender to a murderous organization, to a vile terrorist organization,” said Ben Gvir in response to threats from Hamas and other terror groups, which had warned of repercussions if the tour went ahead.
Among the countries condemning the visit were the US, the UK and France along with much of the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority. Asked about the visit, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said “the United States stands firmly… for the preservation of the status quo with respect to holy sites in Jerusalem.”
Palestinians and most of the international community vehemently reject any changes to the current situation, although most Palestinians also object to any Israeli Jewish presence at the site, including of police officers tasked with preserving security.
The Security Council meeting on the visit is unlikely to result in any concrete action or even a formal condemnation, but will still serve to highlight the significant international disapproval of the visit by Ben Gvir.
US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides offered similar, albeit unprompted, remarks earlier Tuesday; US State Department spokesman Ned Price said that the US was “deeply concerned” by Ben Gvir’s move, which has “the potential to exacerbate tensions and to provoke violence.”
Israel Today (h/t Frederic F) Love him or hate him, agree with him or oppose him, Itamar Ben-Gvir has become a barometer for international attitudes regarding the prophetic restoration of Israel.
Isn’t it funny how one Jew can cause so much international consternation, just for being a Jew where Jews are told they cannot be? Is there any other nationality or ethnicity capable of sparking such global commotion just by being who they are in a particular place at a particular time? It seems to be yet another uniquely Jewish trait. Only a Jew can by his or her solitary presence in a place deemed off-limits to them create such turmoil as to necessitate a meeting of the UN Security Council.
We witnessed the same thing with Ariel Sharon’s visit to the Temple Mount in September 2000, which the world blames for the outbreak of the second Palestinian intifada. A single Jew by merely being in the “wrong place” at the “wrong time” had ignited the region and triggered handwringing in halls of power around the world. For those with eyes to see and ears to hear, this is yet further evidence – not of Israel’s uniquely heinous behavior (as the media likes to paint it), but rather of Israel’s unique, divinely-appointed role in our world.
Think about it. Why should anyone really care what this one Jewish guy does? Religious sensitivities are offended to varying degrees in many places around the world every day, often with violent reactions by one group or another, and no one bats an eye. In fact, 99 percent of folks aren’t even aware it happened, nor would they care.
But a Jew on the Temple Mount? That is somehow special, somehow worthy of the world’s greatest powers meeting in emergency session. That’s because these great world powers, whether or not they admit or even realize it, do attribute special status to the things God has called special – namely, the nation of Israel and His holy mountain in Jerusalem.
In this way, the world’s exaggerated negative attention to Israel and the actions of a single Israeli Jew is an unwitting acknowledgement of God’s existence and the veracity of the Bible. You could go so far as to say it’s an acknowledgement of God’s sovereignty, in that the UN is trying to tell the Jews that they may not do what the Lord God of Israel told them to do, which in this case is to ascend the Temple Mount in worship of Him.
We are witnessing the nations of the world align themselves against the Almighty, though they fail to see it as such. And it’s only possible for them to do so in this way because of the rebirth of Israel as a nation, which has in turn enabled Jews like Itamar Ben-Gvir to again (after 2,000 years of exile) express their commitment to God and His Word in a sovereign and independent manner.

Ben Gvir is a hero and yes he did exactly what i would do. The land in that he lives is free and yes he can go to wherever he wants to and yes he did, GREAT. Note: this volk has no reason to hide and no reason whatsoever not to go to where they want to, that is called freedom.
Yes and i have wondered all my life as to how in the hell did they build their bullshit there without a fight. This place is were king solomon built his temple and as all know this religion is older than the islam because islam is a mix out of the first Jewish religion and christianity, or am i wrong?.I have little knowledge over this part of history then all i need to know is the muslim is not for me or my country.
I wish there was an international civil court in which Jews could and would vindicate their rights to equal justice and human rights to have unfettered access to Judaisms hoy sites. Centuries of persecution and marginalization (yeah that is what it is really) have produced in many Jews a “back of the bus” mentality wherein they are accustomed to forfeiting fair treatment and natural rights. Even when it happens within their own homeland. That fellow, BenGavrir should be admired for his courage and self-respect.
Thanks, Jack, I agree. They should not be restricted as to where they can go in their own country. They should have blown up that Al Aqsa mosque in 1948 and exchanged all the Arabs in Israel for the 1 million Jews who were expelled from the Arab countries in 1948.
Yes. I too am still amazed, that after the wars the Jews handed control back to Jordan, etc. I have no idea what the reasoning was that resulted in return to the status quo.
Back in 1948, the Israelis asked the Arabs who were living in Israel to stay. It was the Arabs who forced them to leave, promising that once the Arabs defeated the Israelis in the war they started as soon as Israel become a state, they would own the whole country and all the Jews there would be killed or driven out.
But of course, in the rewritten history, Arabs accuse Israel of driving all the Arabs out.
So much for tolerance from the so-called most peaceful and tolerant religion Islam. It is unfortunate that the rest of the world was not as hateful and intolerant to Islam as the adherents of prophet mohammed are to the rest of the world’s religions.
Well, it’s not “racism,” but Gvir drawing that playing card from the book is entertaining as hell! Ha Ha Ha! You’re right, it is crazy, huh, that 1 Jew can cause all this fuss. I mean, the SECURITY Council!? Really? Ouch, I’m getting a charley horse spasm in my abs.
It’s not as if Hamas et al, really think the mount is a sacred Islamic site. They had piles of rocks and other weapons stacked on that huge carpet during the last holiday er, sacred observances, they weren’t praying or anything. They threw things down on the Jews below, trying to start something, set some of the trees on fire.
And the Security Council members just don’t get it, refuse to get it. Sheeesh!

Maybe they’ll do us all a favor and carry out a 9/11 type attack on the UN.
