Sudanese refugees prepare to spend the night 10 July 2007, in a park near the Israeli Parliament building in Jerusalem, where a group of around 50 such refugees were brought by volunteers to demand attention from the Israeli government. Some 2800 refugees from Sudan crossed the border from Egypt into Israel illegaly to seek shelter. Israel said last week that it would return all those entering illegally from Egypt along the 250 kilometers border between the two neighbours which are bound by a 1979 peace treaty. However, Israel also indicated that it would consider assisting “a small number” of refugees from the western Sudanese region of Darfur, in the grip of civil war. Israel’s internal security minster Avi Dichter added yesterday , that a refugee camp will be erected in a matter of days at the south of the country close to the prison of Keziot, where some 1000 Sudanese will be held .
