An online so-called “Islamic fashion” brand that caters to Muslim women is opening a retail store in a mainstream American shopping center.
Dispatch Founders of the Virginia-based Zeena say they plan a grand opening on Jan. 31 at Tysons Corner Center in Fairfax County, Va.
Created by sisters Bayan and Amany Jondy, Zeena was launched online in 2011 and offers everything from headscarves and skirts to activewear and swimsuits. The brick-and-mortar site will be just outside a Nordstrom department store.
“The mid-size boutique will offer its unique, demure designs at affordable prizes, but will also offer an array of designs and accessories not sold on its online site to appeal to a broader audience,” a news release says.
Muslim women in the U.S. say that, at times, they have difficulty finding ‘fashionable’ clothing that meets their religious needs to dress modestly. They might employ seamstresses or purchase their clothing online, often from overseas.
Some travel to bigger cities like Chicago, New York or Toronto. Others turn to local specialized marketplaces that import clothing, such as the Global Mall on the North Side.
But U.S.-designed fashions are harder to find. The Jondy sisters said they formed their company to fill a void after discovering how difficult it was to find trendy yet appropriate clothing when shopping themselves.

This is the kind of thing that particularly upsets/scares me too – they’re “normalizing” the odious/abnormal (islam) and it’s like our society is accepting its sick ideas (such as women’s inferiority).
Mark Steyn mentions in his latest book some ad in Europe where they show an attractive woman in her underwear putting on makeup, getting dressed up, brushing her hair, etc. Getting ready for a date. Just before she steps out the door, she dons a hijab, and then walks out into the street So the message is something like: Muslim women can be hot under their hijabs and niqabs (ahem!) too and they’re just like western women when it comes down to it. The trouble is, as he says, the commercial is a lie. The model would have been non-muslim for sure because no muslim woman could have said to her husband/father/brother “I’m going to be working on a commercial in my underwear all afternoon – see you in the evening!” And lived to see the next day, anyway.
Many in our societies seem determined to pretend that islam fits in so nicely, is not really extreme, that muslims are just average people in the end … and it’s a lie. As I said, this is the kind of thing that is particularly worrisome to me, maybe because it’s insidious, blurring the line between truth and falsehood. If someone gets their head chopped off its hard to pretend nothing is wrong. If a store opens selling fashionable hijabs, it’s wrong and dangerous too, just not so obviously.
Islam does NOT fit in our societies, hijabs and what they represent (male oppression of women) does NOT belong in our society, and I hope enough people figure this out before it’s too late.

They are not fooling anyone. In most muslim countries they would not be permitted to dress in some of these styles and vibrant colors. I bet they couldn’t wear that in Iran and Saudi Arabia where they would be arrested and women are forced to adhere to a dress code dictated by Islamic law. They should assimilate and wear clothing that doesn’t represent oppression because ultimately that’s what these clothes stand for.

In the west, the Christian tradition of chivalry (remember that) was that it was the MAN”S fault and her male relatives would kill the man if he did something. The man was supposed to open the door for the woman, and carry her heavy stuff. The man was supposed to be kind and NOT take advantage. (it was all on him) Modesty is a subjective thing. For example, in ancient Egypt, women did not wear tops and it was considered fine. IMO I think it’s actually immodest to call attention to one’s self. People should blend in. So when is something immodest? “I’ll know it when I see it.” If it makes people look, it’s not modest.

You can be modest (according to Islamic standards) and still be fashionable? That’s an oxymoron! There is no being fashionable in Islam. The strictest Islamic societies agree. Just ask Taliban, Saudi Arabia, Iran or Islamic State as to whether women have a right to be fashionable. They universally agree that the answer is “no.”
Dressing modestly is wonderful. Religious Jewish women dress modestly. Married women usually cover their hair. Modesty is for men too. Modesty is for people of all faiths.
Covering the face-totally or partially-is a perversion. So is wearing a body bag over your clothes, and the long black rubber-looking gloves are hideous .
My orthodox Jewish neighbor shaves her head and wears a wig. She doesn’t want to look like a she’s wearing a shroud. Plus she does not like to call attention to herself which defeats the purpose of modesty. Must be something in the Bible about that.
It should ALWAYS be a choice. But I’ve seen it go judgemental in a split-second. In Israel. Everyone’s choice of head covering becomes a delineation of group, and definitely of character for some. No one looks past it. Like club identification. I think true modesty is intelligent and enhances beauty. In Islam though, it isn’t about modesty. It’s about subjugation.
