It was disgusting how Ellison used Thomas Jefferson’s copy of the Koran. Jefferson was interested in how Islam was as he studied the response to the Barbary coast Muslims. It wasn’t because Jefferson thought Islam was in anyway Western or about American. Jefferson stopped the Barbary coast Muslims attack on American shipping. He didn’t think much of Islam as anything else, but un-American.

Indeed. Being older – I still remember many details of history that was fact, and without the Islam being so ‘wonderful’. Says a lot about why history has been so degraded in these days. At least, we still have the old books. A surprising number have been rendered to PDF format, and can be found online. Archive.com is a wonderful resource.
It’s ‘interesting’ how much of the history of Islam in its relation with the non-Islamic world has been ‘cleaned’. This one is very telling. John Adams had the problem beginning in his term, and he didn’t do much of anything about it. However, Jefferson was right on the mark about the situation. He read and he understood right away all he needed about Islam.
MS, I didn’t know about this until I started this blog 8 years ago. But being married to a Marine, I did know what the “shores of Tripoli” were all about. Somehow my school history books never referred to the Barbary pirates as Muslims.
Same for me. Not the married to a Marine part-related by marriage. I found the rest of the story reading Dumas Malone’s multi-volume biography of Jefferson.
My father was a Marine as well. And I knew what the shored of Tripoli was about at home. His family were more recent from Europe – 19th century. Mother’s side is mostly from almost the beginning of America. I am well connected person and our American history. Adams – 4th cousin, Jefferson several times related due to our common Beufort ancestor. And a lot of Nantucket kin that were nearly all whalers.
It does give more interest. My schooling was a lot of knowing the whom of American history was also family history. I can’t say why the Islamic connection was made clear about the pirates. But there again – I grew hearing tales in the family of our roots. Nantucket discovered around 200 islands during the whaling days. All this made me interested – and now rather good at hearing rewriting of history to a desired ‘narrative’.

Oh – I have seen some. From the terrible writing to the out-and-out ‘false narrative’ of material of them, these books need to be composted for the garden. It’s intended this way. To destroy our history, place all blame in our camp, and create a generation that hates themselves as well as their nation and culture. And most not having a deep rooted connection will take this material as ‘gospel’. At least I had good materials with a personal oral tradition back generations to took to. But the young today know little, understand less and have been lead to ‘believe’ the group, and especially what the group leaders says. My own nature and my own heritage really puts a stop to the nonsense.
MS, very few people in America know that Common Core is funded by a terrorist-supporting country. I didn’t even know about that until a few years ago. Trump has said he will get rid of Common Core and with it, al the Islamic indoctrination spreading through schools.
Sad that so few know this. Many people are not well equipped to understand how connected and interwoven are those forces striving to bring us Islam as well as those other issues.
I certainly hope Trump will follow up with action about Common Core. Frankly, getting rid of No Child Left Behind needs to go too. Return education to local control.

Having attended public school from 1955 to 1968 in Chicago(shows my age) I full well know an America at the dawn of Viet nam. Still we learned history from those who had a major first and education skills second.
We have just dodged a HUGE bullet here in NZ. The Government and Education ministry have decided AGAINST global funding for our schools So no islamic indoctrination bullshit for our children. What A Relief!!! Earthquakes must have shaken some sense into the politico’s here
