When the big Jewish immigration to the US began in the early 20th Century,there were many Jewish professionals, lawyers, doctors, engineers, professors, accountants etc. who came from Russia and Europe but they were shut out of those profession by the WASP culture in the US which looked down on Jews. So to support their families, they started little shops and businesses which they eventually built up and had success in. Many colleges and graduate schools were restricted from enrolling Jews back then, too, or if they did take them, they only took a few.
Of course that changed over the years, but by then, Jews were established as good in business. It was Jews who made Hollywood when there was no such thing as “Hollywood” as we know it. A lot of Jews who weren’t in business were in the entertainment field (something else not appealing to WASPS). So combine the Jewish success in the two fields that were wide open to them in the first half of the 20th century and that is the reason they run Hollywood today. They invented it.
