Animals Australia A live sheep isn’t ‘cargo’. He breathes. He thinks. He can suffer. This simple fact maybe lost on wealthy live export companies.But it wasn’t lost on one concerned crew member who was horrified by the suffering he witnessed on live export voyages.
This footage exposes an industry acting unlawfully. It reveals what millions of gentle animals have endured for decades, in secret.
On these enormous ships, sheep are packed so tightly that many can’t lie down to rest. Nor can they all access food and water. Overcrowded pens make identifying sick and injured animals near impossible.
None of this is legal. Add to this extreme heat, exhaustion, rough seas, poor ventilation and millions of litres of untreated waste, and a typical live export voyage quickly becomes the perfect storm for death and suffering.
Over the years, more than 3 million Australian animals have died, often horrifically, on these death ships. But evidence now shows that it is the‘survivors’ who suffer worst of all. They face the same gruelling nightmare, only their suffering never ends.
More than 100,000 litres of urine and faeces accumulates on a typical live export ship every day sheep are on board. The ship won’t be ‘washed out’ until after they’ve disembarked.
As the northern summer kicks in, on-board conditions can turn catastrophic. When temperatures soar — and predictably they do — weeks of untreated waste buildup‘melts’ into a thick, deadly soup. Any animal needing to lie down to rest risks being buried in excrement.
Corrosive ammonia chokes the air and burns the eyes and throats of those on board. Distressed animals rapidly overheat. Their hearts race as they gasp for oxygen. Trapped in what is essentially a ‘giant oven’, extremely heat stressed animals collapse before literallybeing cooked alive.
Other heat stressed sheep may die slowly over the following days. Those who survive a ‘heat event’ will continue to suffer in this putrid bog, now littered with the decaying bodies of their dead companions.
Very few lambs born on a live export ship will ever see the outside world. Many will be trampled, lose their mothers, or be killed by distressed crew members who are routinely ordered to slit their throats.
All this suffering is in aide of one thing: making wealthy live export companies even wealthier. And as it turns out, ‘business as usual’ on one of these ships to the Middle East isn’t just cruel, in many ways it’s illegal.
For the first time, authorities can now independently assess the actions of the live export trade at sea. The Department ofAgriculture is duty bound to stop theexport of live animals if federal export laws are not upheld, or if travel arrangements are inadequate for animal health and welfare.
New evidence reveals not only that the live export trade is breaking the law, but that animals are being denied their most basic needs — proper access to food, water, rest and veterinary care.
I have been a supporter and member of Animals Australia for years they take great risks to expose animal cruelty everywhere but it seems the worst is committed by Islamic countries which is unsurprising.What really angers me is the images of the Aussie business man in his suit and guggling down champagne at the races…you see he has become very rich in this blood and torture trade of sheep/cattle/goats so he can continue his hobby of pampering his champion racehorses…..but its not just him its our Government who turns a blind-eye to this…Its all about BIG BUCKS as usual.

I used to teach NZ teenagers at High School. Whilst many progressed to ‘Varsity those that were left became labourers and the easiest job for them was killing sheep or cows. There were kids that ended up as meat inspectors who were the dregs of the school system. God help the millions of animals under their jurisdiction.
Why does Australia send its sheep like this? Ignoring the inhumanity of it for a moment. These animals wouldn’t be healthy to eat after slaughter, would they? How can Australia make money with such waste? Does Australia send animals to USA this way for slaughter (I’m thinking Australian lamb)? The Islamic ritual (or halal) slaying of livestock requires the poor animal to be in a state of severe fear/shock, terrified, so as the heart will beat wildly enough to expunge every drop of blood before it finally bleeds out. The animal must remain struggling frantically in its death throws for as long as possible.
“But we need to product improve and humanely butcher them here before exporting frozen boxed meat to the Arabian Peninsula”, cry the animal rightists. Bullshit! There is already a highly competitive boxed meat trade but the live trade is what Aussie graziers and Muslims value most.

Paul, if you live in the US, do not eat lamb, no matter how it’s labeled. Virtually all of it comes from Australia or New Zealand, where it is all halal-certified.
im in scotland. i know much lamb from australia and NZ. i did not know it was halal. i stick to scotch lamb from local scottish butchers

halal means the animal is fully conscious as it’s throat is slit and the whole time it bleeds out. this process takes anywhere from several to sometimes 20 minutes for a large animal like a camel. and lord only knows how many of the poor animals are raped by muslim scum before they get to the slaughter house. yes raping animals is perfectly allowable under sharia law and they even have rules of etiquette set forth by their influential imams regarding how to dispose of the animal when they are done raping it.
This is the real face of Islam — pure evil. What Islam does to these helpless animals it also does to human beings.
Does anyone need to know anything more about Muslims? Live export is not ever going to be cruelty free and once they get to the middle East the sheep will be tortured beyond comprehension and for what? A few measly dollars per sheep.
