On June 11th, Serein Tamimi, the first hijabi policewoman officer in Paterson, New Jersey, was sworn into office by the Mayor of Paterson, Andre Sayegh.
deplorabelkel Along with being the first hijab wearing police officer of Paterson, Tamimi is also the first female Palestinian officer in Paterson. She is believed to be the second hijabi officer in New Jersey. (Wow, what a thrill for Paterson!)
The Mayor of Paterson, Andre Sayegh. took to Facebook to congratulate Tamimi. He wrote:
“History has happened! I am proud to swear-in Serein Tamimi. She is the first police officer in Paterson and possibly in New Jersey to wear the hijab. She is also the first female Palestinian officer in Paterson.”
The Mayor of Prospect Park, Mohamed T. Khairullah, who is also muslim, also congratulated Tamimi. On Facebook he wrote:
“Congratulations to Serein Tamimi who became the first #hijabi to be appointed as a police officer in Paterson, Passaic County (the 2nd in the State of #newjersey). Extra bonus: Serein was my student a few years ago so I am extra proud of her.”
