UPDATE 1: Death toll has risen to 5. They say the driver was a German citizen, age 51, and he was drunk and driving someone else’s car. They say they don’t think it was terrorism but he might have mental issues. They know all this about him but still haven’t released his name. Why?
Calgary Herald Five people including a nine-month-old baby were killed and up to 15 injured on Tuesday when a speeding car plowed into a pedestrian area in the western German city of Trier in what authorities said appeared to be a deliberate act.
“We have arrested one person, one vehicle has been secured,” police said, adding that a 51-year-old German suspect from the Trier area had been overpowered within minutes of the incident and was now being questioned.
Prosecutor Peter Fritzen later told a news conference the suspect had drunk a significant amount of alcohol, and authorities were not working on the assumption that there was any Islamist militant motive to the incident. (Why would they even bring that up if the suspect wasn’t a Muslim?)
Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe said: “It looks as if we are talking about a suspect with mental issues, but we should not pass premature judgment.”

At least four people, including a toddler, are dead and 15 others are injured after a car “deliberately” drove into them in a pedestrian zone in a German city.
Witnesses in Trier, in the south west of the country, said a dark grey Range Rover had smashed into people at random. The 4×4 raced through a pedestrianised zone at a speed estimated to be 40mph. The city’s tearful mayor told reporters that a young girl was among the dead.
The driver of the car – a 51-year-old German man who lives in the area – was arrested during a dramatic takedown when police stopped the vehicle in a street nearby.
There is no known motive at this early stage of the investigation, but security services sources reportedly claimed the driver was not on any watchlists. (Which indicates that he is probably a Muslim)
Photos posted online show a body covered by a tarpaulin in a pedestrian street decorated with Christmas lights, while a video clip showed an injured person on the floor next to a shop as witnesses signalled for help.
Mayor Wolfram Leibe said: “I just walked through the city centre and it was just horrible. “There is a stroller lying on the ground, and the girl it belongs to is dead.”
Video posted on Twitter shows police arresting a suspect near to a Range Rover that had significant damage to its front end and appeared to have collided with an unmarked police car during a dramatic takedown.
Public broadcaster SWR reported that the driver had been detained by police, adding that details of the incident,which occurred just after 2pm local time, were unclear.
Police spokesman Uwe Konz told Bild: “We can’t say anything about the background, whether it’s terror or the like yet.”
Mayor Wolfram Leibe, who was overcome by tears as he spoke to reporters, described the incident as a “rampage”.
