The same thing happened to Spain. When their Armada lost to the English in 1588, it spelled the end of Spaniard Golden Age. That country discovered a whole new continent called America and practically drew the world map. But after the Armada defeat, their nation shrunk back to mediocrity.
Same way the Nazi Germany defeat in 1945 has turned Germany into a country of hairy wimps. Nations do not recover very easily from setbacks of that scale.
