Moments after completing one of the most improbable wins in the history of horse racing, Rich Strike kept trying to bite the ‘pony’ horse who was accompanying him. Rich Strike’s aggression – he even bit the outrider’s leg – earned him a punch in the jaw from the outrider.
DVult says
I note that there are no trans species dudes running in that race.
BareNakedIslam says
Even better, no Trans Thoroughbreds either!
Amboyduke says
I am NO expert on horses or the racing of said critters…but to ME, Rich Strike reminds me of the great horse Sea Biscuit….and underdog that had tons of “pluck”.
And that story of Sea Biscuit is one for the ages…if only 1 element of Sea Biscuit’s story had not been in place, it would have been an entirely different outcome. To me, the story almost comes off as supernatural, or with Divine intervention, or something….to make one ponder the whole thing.
Here’s to RICH STRIKE winning 2 more…2022 TRIPLE CROWN CHAMPION!!!
BareNakedIslam says
Amboy a lot of people are making that comparison. We need a Triple Crown underdog champion, now more than ever!
Amboyduke says
ABSOLUTELY…I’m rootin’ for ‘im…
Amboyduke says
I just read that Rich Strike is going to bypass the Preakness!!!!!!
They aren’t gonna run ‘im!!!
BareNakedIslam says
Yeah it sucks. It should be a requirement for the Derby winner to run in the Preakness.
annilinn says
I thought the same thing. Sea Biscuit is one of my favorite stories.at watch the movie all the time.
Amboyduke says
You should watch the American Experience Documentary on him…spell binding…every piece had to fit EXACTLY or the story would have been totally different and not nearly as awesome…
ckc2000 says
That horse was running on spirit & Adrenaline, you can’t just turn it off. I think he did ok seeing he just smoked the whole field.
BareNakedIslam says
Indeed!
BLR says
only thing that thoroughbred did wrong was not tell me he was going to win , jockey could’ve come down out of the clouds and took charge of his mount , whats more you can’t take a hot blooded horse into the barn without a cool down lap or two get rid of that pepper , horse don’t care a bunch of rich hob nobbers are waiting
Stewart - South Africa says
I have known a few horse trainers whilst I lived in England and I have a client who used to be a champion jockey here in South Africa. My two younger sisters run a horse ranch in Australia and have been keen horsewomen since childhood when my Father built them stables and a paddock for their show jumping animals with which they used to complete in England.
None of these folks have any illusions about horses and have told me that yes, the animals can be difficult and sometimes dangerous given their power. They are not cuddly toys in any way!
I think the guy who punched the horse had only that option to try to bring it under control and to stop the attack on his horse and thus on himself, whilst the jockey should surely have been much more firm with his reins but failed to apply that control.
BareNakedIslam says
Stewart, Jockeys in that position (very short stirrup length) don’t have a lot of control over the horse as his position is not designed to slow the horse down but to allow him to gallop as fast as possible. When I have to slow down a horse that’s out of control, I sit far back in the saddle and brace my legs in front me in the stirrups, something that is impossible for a jockey to do in a racing saddle.
If the second outrider could have gotten the rope around his neck, it would have helped, but the horse was very high strung especially after a race like that. I don’t blame the first outrider for punching him. I have smacked my horse on the ground when he gets nippy looking for treats and accidentally bites me. He has to know that it is not acceptable behavior to do that, so I smack him hard on the neck or right on the mouth. He doesn’t try to do that again, at least not for a long time after I do that, even though it is my fault for feeding him too many treats by hand. But he has to know that I am in charge.
After all, Louie (below) is over 1200 pounds.
BLR says
Louie don’t even know he is horse and knowing Bonni I bet he don’t smell like one either … nothing but the best for Louie ! luckiest horse I ever heared about
BareNakedIslam says
For sure!
Az gal says
I thought it was the jockeys fault. Thanks for explaining, Bonni.
Cassandra says
Exactly, the jockey was doing absolutely nothing.
David says
And some people will probably want the outrider arrested for animal cruelty.
BareNakedIslam says
Yes, they do. Or at least fired.
