Only one woman, who speaks English well, gave the correct answer. Most, apparently, think their ancestors were Muslims before Islam even existed. Perhaps the interviewer should have re-phrased the question as “What religion do you think your ancestors practiced before Mohammed was born?”
Although several of the speakers could not articulate it well, I think, in islam they believe that islam predated all religions, even before the original mohammed’s “revelation.” yeah i know it sounds irrational. Muslims believe that when the Almighty gave his relevelation to the ancient prophets (& muslims have a different expurgated list of these people) it was the Jews who changed it to their own purposes. Why? the muslims don’t say. When exactly? the muslims do not exactly explain this either. Where did this change happen? Well the muslims do not know this either. maybe all the Jews met in a big tent in the desert (must’ve been a really big tent!) and decided to change the Almighty’s laws (like the Sabbath day) just to mess with the minds of the muslims yet to come in history. Sounds crazy. It is. Well that’s…..islam! lol.
Actually, according to I.Q. Al Rassooli in “Lifting the Veil”, Jews and Christians were, in fact, “Muslims” before Muhammad was born. Being a Muslim means believing in One God Only.
Muhammad’s first wife, Khadijah, was a Hanifya, i.e. one who believed only in the God of Abraham but wasn’t a Jew or Christian. The correct nuance is that Jews and Christians were Muslims as distingushed from today’s Muslims who should technically be called “Muhammaden Muslims”.

I remember there was a lot of initial hype in my region about how a Muslim won the coveted award. It quickly died out.
Unfortunately, Abdus Salam belonged to the Ahmeddiya sect of Islam. They’re the most persecuted minority in the world.
They are not seen as proper Muslims and are not allowed to Mecca for Haj or Umrah
In Pakistan, they’re not even allowed Muslim burial grounds, and there is a widespread social boycott. They’re treated worse tha n Jews were in Nazi Germany. They have to wear a badge to remind others that they’re Ahmeddiyas.
Thousands of Ahmeddiyas have been killed in Pakistan for no arbitrary reason.
So technically, Abdus Salam is not a Muslim. All Pakistanis (in fact, most Muslims) would hate Ahmeddiyas. But that doesn’t stop them from claiming his achievement as they’re so few.
Incidentally, Abdus Salam’s primary research partner was Jogesh Pati, a Hindu Indian.

The other Nobel prize recipient you mentioned is Ahmed Zewail, who won for his pioneering work in femtochemistry.
Zewail was a proper Muslim but I seriously doubt if he prayed 5 times a day or performed the Hadj or kept fasts during Ramadan.
I have never seen Zewail being invited to any Muslim forums or to Islamic schools and colleges to inspire Muslim students. In fact, most Muslims won’t know his name.

What does anyone expect. Muslums aren’t known for their intellect. The only answers that were rational are from a Shia (not “real” Moslem), and a non hijabi Christian (I believe she was ).
The issue isn’t whether they ‘know’ (and many do) it’s whether they can ‘admit’ it (and survive).
Islam the only ‘religion’ where admitting to ever (even 1400 years ago) being anything else ‘will’ get you killed (especially if you ‘were’ one of the hated Jews or Christians, how else can they keep them as the hated ‘other’?).
