I know my French is not at a level you like, but this is a common problem with you Frenchies.
Every time I was in France I tried practicing with the natives, but all of you immediately switch to English. I find that deeply insulting.
This is not a problem with the Spaniards, Dutch, Italians, or Germans. If I speak to them in their local language, however bad, they are excited to hear it from a foreigner.

Ghulam, I had the same experience in Paris. But in stores it was even worse. They pretended not to understand me at all. But I was with a friend who lived there and spoke fluent French and she repeated exactly what I said, then yelled at them for pretending not to understand me. When we walked out she told me that a lot of shopkeepers in that area hate American tourists.
I had a different problem in Japan where I spoke Japanese fairly fluently. The shopkeepers understood everything I said but would try to answer me in very broken English which I could barely understand. But back in the 70’s it was unusual to see a blonde haired blue eyed foreigner speaking good Japanese.

The Frenchies are so prickly and sensitive about their language they immediately start acting like divas. Extremely territorial and defensive.
Based on what you described, looks like the Japanese are that way too.
Clearly with these two nationalities, you shall get much better response if you stick to English.
I feel a sense of BETRAYAL. Think of it. You spend so many years of your life trying to learn their language solely out of intellectual curiosity.
And what is your reward? Despite all your efforts and time, you only get a grumpy response in English.

It’s not at all the same with the Japanese. They are nothing if not humble and they are the most polite nation of people I have ever known. In parts of Japan where I was, the people had never seen a “gaijin” (foreigner) up close, let alone one who could speak and read Japanese. Once they got used to it, they would always speak to me in Japanese and invited in all the friends and neighbors to see the Japanese-speaking blonde American.
They are lovely people and I always felt welcome there.
