the only misgivings i have regarding community patrols is that they might not have the skills to handle really dangerous types. the police are much better trained in general. however, if these community patrols did get such training & were properly equipped & committed to face the these threats then they should go for it. one benefit such community patrols would have, over the police, is that they would not have to read “miranda warnings” to the arrestees before taking statements, admissions and confessions from them. why? because they are not policemen nor are acting as agents of government. i applaud them for their initiative.
