Unlike most EU nations, Hungary took a hard-line approach to the Muslim invasion that started in 2015. This included erecting impenetrable border fencing, enhanced border control and security staffing, as well as criminalizing illegal border crossers, giving them long prison sentences. This resulted in illegal crossings plummeting more than 99% in just one year. The new laws also reduced approvals of asylum applications to less than 1% per year.
Not surprisingly, European Union officials have condemned Hungary’s strict immigration controls, demanding that they accept EU-mandated quotas of Muslim migrants and refugees. But Hungarian leader Viktor Orban refused to comply with the quota system, and despite threats of reprisals and sanctions from the EU, he has not backed down.
