As they prepare to head to the Paris Olympic Games, Israel’s Olympic athletes have been receiving death threats from Muslims by email and phone in the last week. The anonymous emails threatened to repeat the atrocities of the Munich Massacre during the 1972 Summer Olympics, promising harm to “any Israeli presence at the Olympics.”

Some Israeli athletes, including the Opening Ceremony flagbearer, judoka Peter Paltchik and swimmer Meiron Amir Cheruti, received invitations to their own funerals. A screenshot of the message sent to Cheruti showed the message inviting him to his funeral and listing his date of death as July 27, 2024. The message also included a link that supposedly contained directions to the location of the funeral.
“The People’s Defense Organization announces that it intends to harm any Israeli presence at the Olympics,” the message read, adding that “the Jewish lobby that controls the French Parliament won’t decide anything anymore.”
“If you come, take into account that we intend to repeat the events of Munich 1972,” the letter continued, referring to the Munich Massacre in which the Black September terrorist group broke into the Olympic village and took Israeli athletes hostage, eventually killing 11 and a German police officer.
“You will be awaiting attack at every moment — in the airport, the hotel, and the streets which belong only to us. Even a wave of arrests against our organization won’t stop us from seeing our plan through. Prepare for the intifada!” the letter ended.
On Saturday, athletes continued to receive threatening messages to their phones written in broken Hebrew. In addition to the messages, the athletes received phone calls from foreign numbers they didn’t recognize.
The Paris 2024 organizing committee has already made assurances that “unprecedented” steps will be implemented to secure the Games, including the deployment of 30,000 police and gendarmes who will be reinforced by roughly 20,000 soldiers. In addition, between 17,000 and 22,000 private security agents are expected for the Olympic sites and fan zones.
Hard-left French lawmaker Thomas Portes, of the France Unbowed (LFI) party, made headlines over the weekend for saying at a demonstration that “the Israeli delegation is not welcome in Paris. Israeli sportspeople are not welcome at the Paris Olympic Games.”
In an effort to keep Israeli athletes safe, the team will be accompanied by a record number of Shin Bet guards. The operation, described as the largest ever for Israeli athletes and staff at an Olympic event, involves sending armed Israeli agents to the French capital.
Shin Bet will oversee athletes’ security “at every stage and place” from the moment of their arrival to the moment they board the plane back to Israel. A former Shin Bet chief, Yaakov Peri, told the Telegraph that the operation is “one of the toughest security challenges” any Israeli delegation has faced in the country’s history

I graduated from HS in Minnesota in 1972, and remember when this happened. I also remember my father crying when we heard/saw the news. I will never forget that. I didn’t see my father cry often, but he was very sensitive when it came to some things. He had many Jewish friends when he and his family lived in New York. My parents had a deep love for the Jewish people, for Israel, and I can tell you that is where my love originated also. I didn’t know much at the time, but I knew this was important to my parents. I do remember my mother talking to us about the Holocaust. It was so horrifying to me. I didn’t understand “Palestine” or Arabs, or the roots of the hatred at that time.
I had never heard of terrorism before the Munich Olympics. I did learn about it during my first overseas assignment in Europe, when many of my colleages were taken hostage in Tehran, and later in my second assignment when there were several terrorist incidents, including the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut and the bombing of our Embassy there, when all of my colleagues stationed there were killed. Even at that time I knew nothing about Islam; I just thought they were “Arab terrorists”. After 9/11 I Iearned.
Jeanne, I was the same back then. A very hostile Arab family moved in next door to us when I was a kid, any my parents always referred to them as Arabs, not Muslims. I didn’t know much until 9/11 either.
I watched this live at the time. Their actions at the 1972 Olympics is what placed “palestinians” on my enemies of humanity list. They have not done a damn thing to get off of it since then. They are still first and foremost, terrorists.
I just hope the Israelis have armed security around all their athletes.
