A Muslim, identified as Asif Rahman, who worked for the U.S. government has been charged with leaking classified information assessing Israel’s earlier plans to attack Iran, according to court papers filed Wednesday. He was indicted last week in U.S. court in Virginia on two counts of willful transmission of national defense information — felony charges that can carry significant prison sentences.

Where was Asif Rahman born? In the U.S. or Iran? Was he a naturalized U.S. citizen or not? Where did he grow up? What is his educational background? Where did he work before? Where was he living when he was recruited? What are his family connections? Who are they? We now learn his loyalties were to Iran. This didn’t happen in a vacuum.
When Rahman applied to the Agency he would have had to fill out Standard Form 86 (SF-86, see link below), a VERY lengthy form which has been around for decades and which would be the basis for his initial background investigation, and these investigations can take months to complete before the Agency considers you for employment and gives you a call to interview with them. Your entire history, family, employment record, contacts (used for references), EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU, is investigated based on that form. The security officers doing the inestigation will travel to wherever you have lived and worked. They interview all of your references, and then some. And if you are called for an interview, then comes the polygraph before a final decision is made. So pehaps he passed that initial polygraph exam. Rahamn would also have had to undergo a polygraph, and depending on how long he had been with the Agency, more than one, at least every five years. Even the treacherous Rick Ames passed his polygraphs while he was spying, The reason he came to the attention of the Agency was in part because of the suspicions of his colleages regarding his and his greedy wife’s lavish lifestyle, and also his bank deposits, which prompted an FBI investtigation because those large deposits coincided with his meetings with the Russion IO.
Rahman undoubtedly also had language skills (e.g., Farsi) the Agency seeks, and which are important to have for obvious reasons. They are always seeking certain language skills. Education is also a consideration.
I certainly understand Hugh Fitzgerald’s many questions regarding how Rahaman got his security clearances, but when you are hired you get security clearances unless there is some kind of problem. And no, your name has nothing to do with it unless you are discovered to have troubling connections. Many Muslims are working in the Agency now. Perhaps there was nothing alarming that came to the attention of the Office of Security during his initial background investigation. That is quite possible. Rick Ames, Robert Hanssen, Jim Nicholson, and all the rest of the traitors, including, by the way and for example, those of Cuban background who spied for Cuba, ALL underwent extensive background investigations, filled out the same SF-86, took the polygraph exam before they were formally hired.
The CIA is a counterintelligence organization. The purpose of counterintelligence is not to prevent spying, but to find the spies, as Paul Redmond famously reminded us. Incidents and anomolies spur CI investigations, like the leak in this case. Rahman was found out, and now see where Rahman’s loyalties lie, and where they have been all along. Good riddance.

After 20 January I bet that there will be far fewer Muslims at the CIA with John Ratcliff at the helm and since the military performs the task of performing most background checks for DoS with Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense, a fair number of people there might find themselves in an unemployment line. I can remember when one possessed access to Two-Man items, it was explicitly clear that if one released the information, even if accidently, that person could be executed. I think the punishment for releasing TS information wrongfully should be punishable by firing squad.

I haven’t seen any “REASON # _ to Never hire a Muslim” (or something closely like-worded) posts here in awhile. If there were ever a reason not to hire a Muslim, this would be it. It’s very definitely proof that Muslims should NEVER be even considered for, let alone be given, a “top security clearance” from the U.S. government.
