So…was the New York City taxi driver who slammed his car into pedestrians outside Macy’s named ‘Mohammed?’

A New York City taxi driver crashed his vehicle into multiple pedestrians on the sidewalk outside the iconic Macy’s Department store in Manhattan on Christmas Day, injuring a child and five others.

The New York Taxi Workers Alliance represents more than 19,000 drivers in the city. “Ninety-five percent of cab drivers are immigrants, from over 100 countries,” said Muslim co-founder Javaid Tariq, and “sixty to seventy percent of our members are Muslim.” As such, the five most common first names are Mohammad, Mohammed, Muhammad, and Mohamed.

NY Post A taxi driver slammed into multiple pedestrians — including a 9-year-old boy and his mother — in Herald Square Wednesday afternoon, according to police and sources. The Christmas chaos unfolded outside Macy’s on 34th Street and 6th Avenue shortly after 4 p.m. when the northbound-traveling driver jumped a curb, cops and sources said.

Six victims were injured, including two that were taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center and one, the child, who was taken to Bellevue Hospital. 

The boy’s mother was knocked under the cab and the still-spinning wheel was on top of the kid’s leg, a tourist visiting from Oregon told ABC 7.  “One man went over [to] shut the car off, got into it and shut it off. There was a whole group of us that ripped the fender off, lifted the car back,” the witness, who did not give his name, said, adding his wife was also left injured.

“Then that’s when I grabbed the little boy, got him to the corner [and] realized what ended up being his mom underneath.” All the victims had non-life threatening injuries, sources said. Three others were treated at the scene.

Sam Mohammed, 35, a hot dog stand worker was serving customers when the taxi slammed onto the sidewalk mere feet away from him. “I was parked in front of this car and I saw the car going onto the sidewalk and hitting people,” Mohammed told The Post.  “This is scary,” he added.

The crash comes as law enforcement agencies around the world have been on edge this holiday season after a Saudi Muslim national plowed his car into a Christmas market in Germany last week, killing 5 and injuring 200.
