Secretary of State Marco Rubio has confirmed the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a green card-holding Columbia University graduate student and pro-Hamas activist, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). “We will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported,” Rubio said on the social platform X, sharing a news report regarding Khalil.
The Hill Amy Greer, Khalil’s attorney, told the AP she informed ICE agents of his immigration status, only to be told they were acting on State Department orders to revoke his student visa.
The focus on Columbia University comes after the Trump administration canceled $400 million of federal contracts with the school over its alleged inaction against antisemitism on campus. Students at Columbia took the lead in the nationwide pro-Palestinian encampments last spring that led to almost 2,000 arrests across the country.
NY PostDespite graduating months ago, Khalil,has remained active in recent disruptive protests, including last week’s takeover of the Milstein Library at Barnard College. Videos and photographs posted on X depict him holding a bullhorn near the library entrance and engaged in discussion with school administrators.
That protest featured violent propaganda flyers that purportedly came directly from the “Hamas Media Office,” including one pamphlet titled “Our Narrative … Operation Al-Aqsa Flood,” which justified the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people.
The arrest comes just days after Trump announced plans to yank about $400 million in federal grants and contracts from Columbia due to its noncompliance with anti-discrimination laws.
Trump celebrated Khalil’s arrest in a Monday post on Truth Social.
“We will find, apprehend, and deport these terrorist sympathizers from our country — never to return again,”the president said. “If you support terrorism, including the slaughtering of innocent men, women, and children, your presence is contrary to our national and foreign policy interests, and you are not welcome here. We expect every one of America’s Colleges and Universities to comply.”

Mahmoud is incensed, claiming his free speech rights were violated. He may try to fight this in court for a while (at big expense, unless CAIR takes his case), but he will lose in the end because his criminal actions were not protected free speech. The judge may issue a temporary injunction prohibiting his deportation until the case is over, but he will be detained by immigration until he is sent back to Syria. Maybe he is the wrong kind of Muslim for the Syrian warlord. Oh well, buh-bye Mahmoud! Next time don’t FA and you will not FO!
