I believe the dumbing down, began about the same time as MTV and Pac-Man arrived on the scene. When I suggested to a young man, at that time, that he might probably enjoy a book on the subject of fly fishing, in which we both had an interest, he stated, “I prefer to learn from a video format”. Just go to your town public library, and it is a place of quiet, and solitude. As another measure of time, when the internet search engines became more interesting, and put Encyclopedia Britanica out of business.
The older amongst us will recall the beginning of the “dumbing down” of western education systems perhaps 30 years ago – a deliberate act of governments for purposes of their own – which of course was always denied.
Here we see a couple of decades on, the fruits of that dumbing down, where such ignorance prevails almost universally today!
Try more like 40+ years. I can remember in junior high my Social Studies class (Americans think history and civics in one class) being taught or mistaught, perhaps maltaught historical events with the history books being written by the victors. I knew darned well the answer required for the test or exam. So they tried training me to self-gaslight. Well I’d give them the answer they wanted to hear.
