NY Post (h/t Nita) Mayhem erupted outside Columbia University’s graduation Wednesday as pro-Hamas/anti-Israel students burned their diplomas and cops tussled with dozens of rowdy demonstrators, arresting at least two.
Protesting students inside the Upper Manhattan ceremony also tried to drown out acting President Claire Shipman’s commencement address with raucous chants of “free Palestine!” and demanding the release of former graduate student and organizer of major disruptive protests at Columbia in support of terrorists, Mahmoud Khalil, who was detained by ICE agents in March and is currently awaiting deportation.
Khalil, a spokesman for the radical Columbia University Apartheid Divest group, or CUAD, is slated for deportation by the Trump administration for allegedly engaging in activities “aligned to terror group Hamas.”
CUAD put out a call on social media ahead of Wednesday’s graduation pledging to disrupt the ceremony. “WEAR A MASK! GET LOUD! BRING NOISE! NO COMMENCEMENT AS USUAL UNDER GENOCIDE!” the group wrote in an X post Tuesday.
Some of the graduates attempted to silence Columbia University President Claire Shipman speaking during Columbia’s commencement ceremony, as she directly referenced Khalil — with the students screaming, “Free Mahmoud Khalil!” We firmly believe that our international students have the same rights to freedom of speech as everyone else, and they should not be targeted by the government for exercising their right,” Shipman said.
Last year’s commencement had to be canceled over safety concerns after an anti-Israel encampment protest engulfed the Morningside Heights campus for weeks during the spring
Of some 12,000 graudates, hundreds continued the upheaval by torching their diplomas in protest, loudly booing, chanting and brandishing signs denouncing the Jewish state for alleged “atrocities” committed in its retaliatory war against Hamas who committed a massacre of Israelis on Oct. 7, 2023.
The ceremony comes at a tenuous time for the Ivy League school, which was stripped of about $400 million in federal funds by the Trump administration over allegations it hasn’t done enough to snuff out antisemitism on campus.
Last month, Columbia acquiesced to a list of demands made by Trump’s Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism, including a campus crackdown on mask wearing, empowering campus security to make arrests and putting its Middle East studies program under academic receivership. But the new policies have not put a complete stop to the anti-Israel incidents on campus.

What needs to be considered is this. We can not expect anything better from these Foreign Students. Punt them, kick them out do notgraduate them. But for the American students doing this we expect so much better. What is in their heads to think they can do this on a wholesale level and get away from it. Each person needs their graduation overturned. Haravrd and Columbia needs to rescing their degrees and expell them for a start. Burning diplomas? That’s such WEAK sauce. These kids want to be “dangerous”&”revolutionaries” etc. They do not have what it takes. Now if they wanted to make the TRUE Revolutionary statement,show their true devotion to their cause,instead of burning diplomas, they should SELF IMMOLATE. What’s in a diploma? I graduated in the summer, therefore, I didn’t want to wait a year for a graduation ceremony. It was mailed, no big deal.
I had a very good friend, also a member of the USMC “Young Leaders” ($600.00 per semester, basic between freshman and sophomore summer, Quantico Officers Candidate School between junior and senior year, upon graduation …. commission). He did not graduate early … I guess $600.00 could buy a lot of beer. Moreover, any time that you were running low on funds, give a call, pick up another $600.00 check, another 6 month commitment (I believe he became a lifer by advances).
In any event, Lee Bergen (one of the funniest guys that I have ever met), attended graduation ceremonies, received his deploma, rolled up a lid in it and smoked it. That’s the only practical use of a diploma that I have seen to this day.
