I met my japaner wife while we were both undergraduates at the University of Iowa. At that time she had a student visa. Although she’s a year older than I am, she was a year behind me towards graduation (gotta love CLEP tests, started out as a junior). We got married following my receiving my commission (Always Faithful). Just getting a green card was a nightmare of jumping through hoops. She never applied for citizenship (US), as she was proud of being a japaner.
Clock ahead to the year 2000. I had been working assignments in the japans and Republic of Korea for a tad over a decade. My wife was not overseas with me until the chilluns had finished high school and were enrolled in college (the older of our daughters attended Marymount Manhattan, which turned her uber liberal – poor thing). But, I digress. Upon returning to the “Big Island”, we were in for quite a surprise.
Since she had not previously applied for a “reentry permit” and had been out of the U.S. for well over a year, we had to go through a nightmare of permanent resident status. While awaiting that, she applied for a driver’s license. In this state, illegal aliens can get a drivers license. However, in her instance, she needed to show an actual Social Security card. She had laminated hers many, many years ago and that could not be accepted. So, just to get a DL, and not sit at home until permanent resident status was approved, she had to apply for some type of work permit. TB scratch tests and all, at which point she could apply for a SS card. Damned thing came issued with the same number that her laminated card had, issued multiple decades ago. All of that just to get a DL prior to green card.
Then the forms, proof of income, balance sheet (audited none-the-less) for me as her sponsor. Then during one of these “interviews” the “judge” believed that she, or I, had made some misstatement and were subject to charge(s) of perjury. Hell, I don’t recall a single thing that wasn’t stated true. But, that was close to a Five Thousand U.S. Dollar fine.
No refugee camp in turkeyland, but close to a year on bureaucratic hell. Illegal Aliens can go to hell.

Anybody with a Green Card aka Alien Residence Card cannot Vote nor stay out of the USA for more than 365 days unless some emergency like a death and even then prooof of death must be shown, like a death certificate.
The reason for this is simple, if you wish to live in America fine but if you wish spend more than a year outside of America then not fine as this privilege is handed to those who wish to stay in the USA permanently.
If your wife is such a proud Japanese citizen then perhaps Japan is the country she should live in.
Im not sure if Japan accepts Dual Citizenship.
Use an Immigration Lawyer next time as doing this paperwork nightmare will make ya crazy.

Both times we used an immigration attorney-at-law. And, they were quite a financial drain.
The reason that my wife left the country for more than 365 days was to be with me.
She would live in the japans if she was not married to me. I was there, working an assignment with Shimizu. It lasted over three years. She begged me to make my assignment permanent and stay there. I refused. That’s why she isn’t living in the japans even with respect to your beliefs that “perhaps Japan is the country she should live in.”
As far as “dual citizenship”, that used to not be allowed in the U.S. Until the uber liberals, such as you made that possible. I man cannot serve two masters, something that your type simply cannot understand.
I was attempting to show how difficult the “legal” way, as opposed to how easy these damned illegals have it. Obviously, you seem to like the ease of illegal immigration.
