My USN friend and I went to see the USS Missouri (the battleship on which the Japanese signed the peace treaty w/the USA following WW2). It was still an active duty ship then and we met one of the Marines that were billeted on the ship! I don’t remember how many other Marines were billeted on the ship but what exactly is their function? Security? Someone else mentioned that the Ohio class battleships had tomahawk missile launchers w/nuclear warheads so maybe that’s why the Marines were on-board?
My friend who was on the Connie said some of the Marines on-board guarded the captain and admirals (if there were any on-board). The Connie may have also had nuclear weapons on-board.
