I must be following the wrong news stations.
He’s an airman. Not sure if he’s a pilot, but they call him a Weapons System officer with rank of colonel.
It seems like everyone in the USAF is a major or colonel.
Just the ones we hear about I guess. They are all heroes for flying into enemy territory IMHO.

It looks to me like the media is returning to levels of non-patriotism in covering a war, that haven’t been seen since the days of Vietnam
(But they have no justification since a couple of jets being shot down is nowhere near that war’s American casualties )
