When hunting whitetails, very rarely you will find one alive and languishing in pain, laying on its side. Since the time when I was a little boy (around 11 years of age), I was taught to slice the throat of the dying animal to put them out of their misery. You hit two major arteries and they peacefully bleed out in a very short time, oftentimes less than one minute.

You’re right. Kosher slaughter does it the quickest way by cutting thru the spinal cord so the animal dies virtually instantly. That’s why Jews are not allowed to eat halal meat but Muslims are allowed to eat kosher.

On a related note, Bonni, I was wondering how halal slaughter conforms to.USDA standards and regulations for meats sold in non-Muslim grocery stores. Where are the animals actually slaughtered? Or is the meat just pronounced halal to satisfy Muslims? How does this work?
I always check my purchases now of chicken and lamb to make sure they are not marked as halal. Fortunately, I found fresh lamb shoulder chops from a farm in Pennsylvania at our local Lowe’s Foods store that were not marked as halal for our Easter dinner. So many stores, including Aldi and WalMart sell halal lamb and chicken.
