A Tunisian immigrant believed to be responsible for the fire was arrested by police. Rough seas on 01 April forced Italian authorities to suspend the evacuation of mostly Tunisian would-be immigrants from the island of Lampedusa. Tensions between the locals and migrants, many of whom have been sleeping on beaches and public buildings converted into make-shift shelters, has increased in recent days. Earlier this week, several ships began moving some of the immigrants to reception camps in Sicily and elsewhere in Italy. Some 18,000 migrants have arrived in Lampedusa since January, when an uprising toppled former Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. EPA/MICHELE NACCARI
