National Post (by Ethan Cox) Last Thursday morning, a 48-year-old (Muslim) woman, Naima Rhertouity from Morocco, died tragically in Montreal, after the scarf (hijab) she was wearing became caught in the escalator at a downtown metro station.
Almost immediately, the Journal de Montréal printed the headline they would stand by: “Strangled by her hijab,” referring to a head covering worn by many Muslim women, which has become something of an obsession for proponents of the Parti Québécois government’s Charter of Values. By early afternoon the hijab story was gaining so much steam that the police felt the need to (dishonestly) deny it, with spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant leaving the following statement on their media line: “A lot of people are talking about a hijab. The information that I have is that it’s a scarf.” (Photo of the woman in hijab – Above Right)
By Thursday, the Quebecor media properties (of which the Journal is a part) were alone in reporting the fact that the woman was entangled by a hijab, with other media outlets reporting that it was a scarf. Rather than retract, the Journal doubled down, with later versions noting that the police were denying the woman’s hijab caught, but insisting that they had two sources confirming it was a hijab.
But did these two officers see a hijab? Or did they see a scarf and let their over-eager imaginations, primed by months of public debate over the proposed Charter of Values, see what they wanted to see?
The day after the accident, the victim was identified as Naima Rharouity, a mother of two who was taking French classes, despite having recently emigrated from French-speaking Morocco, to better integrate into Quebec society. As it happens she did wear a hijab; as it also happens, witnesses indicate it was her long scarf which became caught. But the real question is, why does it matter? (Because she had no intention of “integrating into Quebec society” if she was wearing a Muslim supremacist symbol – the hijab)
“It’s upsetting to me that there’s so much emphasis on the hijab and the fact that Rharouity was a Muslim,” a friend of the victim told the Montreal Gazette’s Christopher Curtis. “Her hijab would have been tucked neatly under her winter coat and a long scarf. I spoke to the person who was next to her when it happened and she says it was a scarf that got caught. I wear a hijab, too, and it just seems impossible that it could ever get caught in an escalator.” (Yet it did!)
In the case of such a human tragedy, should we not put aside the petty political point-scoring, and the scarcely-veiled racism (What ‘race’ is Islam?), for long enough to acknowledge that a woman died, a fact equally tragic no matter what religion she practiced? Ultimately, the responsibility was on the Journal’s editors to exercise restraint (So now, hiding the truth is considered ‘restraint?’), rather than reach for the most inflammatory headline available to them. (Only inflammatory because it’s demonstrates the need for the Charter of Values which muslims and leftists don’t like) Instead, they emptied a jerry-can of gasoline all over the tinderbox that is Quebec today, and lit a match. (Ewwww, telling the truth is now a firestorm)
Comments on social media, such as one which celebrated the death and expressed hope it would lead Muslims to learn their lesson about not wearing the hijab in Quebec, are indicative of the prejudice stirred up by this case. Another said simply enough “one less terrorist in Quebec.” (Or one less breeder of one)
It’s time to take a stand against the creeping scourge of Islamophobia, which is a problem not only in Quebec, where the odious tone of the debate regarding the so-called Charter of Values has put it under a spotlight, but across the country. He even wished me a Merry Christmas when we saw him at the store this past holidays.
I also met an older woman who still is muslim and talked to her. She was from Afghanistan. She told me about her daughters and how they were abused and killed by muslims. She told me to keep a very watchful eye on my children and to keep them away from muslim men…..

If I see a moslem man hitting a moslem woman in public…I will step in and try to stop it….all because I still have some compassion for my fellow humans and know that not all believe in hurting others.
I don’t want to become like some of them and the only way is to hang onto some of my compassion for their plight until they can see the errors of their ways.

What a wonderful short of entertainment. Would like it to have been a bit more graphic; the sound of choking, the muffled screams of distress, bulging, fear-filled eyes, face turning purple, the final gasp. Oh, well, my imagination will have to serve me in that regard.
She probably dropped a purse or other item, bent over to recover it and got the head bag caught in the mechanism. I read of a man being killed in a similar manner when his shirt became tangled in an escalator. The length of the head bag in the family pictures indicates the safety problem posed by this type of garb. The video was computer generated except for the scene of her being removed in a body bag.
Scarves are so fashionable, by all women, now. A wonder this strangling doesn’t happen all the time, in different circumstances.
“Normal people” don’t wear them dragging on the floor, either. You’d have to be quite stupid to do so.
Funny…but I asked the same thing on another blog…How in the hell did her hijab get caught? They don’t have long enough ends once tied to get caught. She must have been pushed or tripped for that to happen.
Thinking now that it’s been darn cold here this winter and if she was wearing her coat and a scarf like most of us wear in Canada during Winter…then that could have been the scarf they were talking about….

I tend to think that while Islam is a Satanic Cult, the women are treated the worst off by everyone. This women had no way to get free of it and live a peaceful, fulfilling life without having to look over her shoulder every second of her life. The Men would hunt her down and kill her.

BTW…. I do care that she died such a horrible death even if she was moslem. She was only riding an escalator…. wearing a hijab that some male she married ( most likely) is enforcing her to wear in Canada as a political statement. Don’t see that she had much choice in the matter. She gets kicked in the teeth constantly by her new neighbours( for wearing a hijab and by her family threatening her life on everything she does or does not do.

Ask any abused woman how easy it is to leave? Especially after years of being abused mentally, emotionally and physically! I don’t expect you to understand this either as you most likely have not been in that scenario. I have! it’s not easy believe me. I had nightmares for years after I left…when I was able to sleep. Every little noise would wake me up as I was scared that my ex’s threats were being carried out.
I’m sure that the little moslem girls do not like being raped or physically abused…I don’t think that the women like any of the abuse either…they just can’t find a way out easily. When a woman is only 5′ 2″ and weighs 100 lbs soaking wet…how much chance does she have in getting the upperhand in a physical fight with someone who weighs over double her weight and stands a foot above her?
Killing him was not an alternative…I would have been put into another jail and would have had to put up with abuse from other woman who were much bigger than I was! yeah…that would have solved everything!

On Saturday, police officer said it was her hijab, not scarf. The story was printed in French. Could be a scarf, nobody knows.
They still don’t know what happened. They think she night have either fallen, maybe pushed. The guy that called emergency with the red phone disappeared real fast and rumors are floating around he was a muslim.
The husband, well again, all is not what it seems. His mother died in Morocco so he went for the funeral. But it would seem he was working in Morocco when she died.
The investigation is still ongoing.
And yes, we, the Québécois sure love visible muslims… this is because we are very informed on islam issues. We saw firsthand their marches against the Charter, their play at victimhood and their constant insults hurled at us (Quebecers have a hard time with victimhood).
They also stress us out with their unreasonable accommodation demands which we fight against tooth and nail by mediatising for weeks on end. Plus, the terrorism guys we have to deal with when they get caught (more money) and the lawsuits.
On the buses during daytime, all you have are hijabees, meaning they are not working. If they took off the damn hijab, they might get a job. Much easier on welfare.
If I was a visible muslim, I wouldn’t feel real welcome in Québec.
