They have a sort of proportional voting system, so in addition to the candidates that the public votes for directly, each party has a list of additional possible candidates not voted for by the public who will be selected for extra seats in the parliament, should the proportion of the vote won by the party in the general election exceed the number of seats they won by in that general (public) election.
So the answer is, nobody in Scotland voted for him by name in the general election, he was selected by his party, the Scottish Nationalist Party, first to get a seat, then as a minister, then as the First Minister.
