Smyrna was a beacon of Christianity, right from the beginning. Its first bishop, St Polycarp of Smyrna, was a disciple of John’s, who was Jesus’ beloved disciple. How his heart must have ached when he wrote those words of the Revelation, knowing that a great suffering was awaiting Polycarp. And indeed, Polycarp suffered a martyrs death. But Smyrna remained Christian untl 1922, when its last bishop Chrysostomos of Smyrna also suffered an equally torturous death in the hands of the Turks.
I used to know a man who passed away in 1999 and he was well in his nineties then. He had lived his adolescent years in Smyrna, and he was telling me how beautiful it was, and how even under the Ottoman empire everybody spoke Greek there, and the city was so flourishing that even the poorest, “let’s say the shoshiner” , he would tell me, “could afford to have meals at a restaurant”.
Until, in September 1922, the barbaric Turkish military of Kemal Ataturk came, and massacred the Christian population, the Greeks and the Armenians. The old man I knew was one of those who managed to escape and come to Greece to start their broken lives anew.
