I think I understand why he didn’t kill him. This was in France, after all, where Alek was a foreigner, not knowing what the consequences (for him) would have been if he had actually killed the guy.

It’s hard to believe they really tried to kill him. They had his weapons at their disposal: guns, box cutter. They didn’t have to stop beating him either.
